Convention Of Knights Of Pythias Closes Tonight

The 56th annual New Mexico Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias convention ends tonight with a complimentary barbecue dinner dance and entertainment at Ingalls Memorial Home starting at 7 30. Officers to be elected and 1941 convention city selected this afternoon.

Nation sets peacetime draft as 16,500,000 ordered to register

President Roosevelt signed the peacetime conscription bill and proclaimed October 16 as the registration date for 16,500,000 men aged 21 to 35. The draft plans unfold with 60,000 national guardsmen in uniform for a year of duty and 35,000 more to join on October 15. The total force will include 240,000 guardsmen and a regular army of 375,000, with executive orders expected to mobilize the machinery.

Willkie Speech Draws Roswell Area on Special Train

A Willkie campaign train carried 217 passengers from Roswell to Clovis and back with a 12:50 PM rally on the rear platform. Of the riders, 180 were from Roswell, 25 from Carlsbad, 7 from Artesia, and 5 from Hagerman. Thirty eastern New Mexico residents joined Clovis to Vaughn, and 30 more rode Vaughn to Belen. Several Roswell figures were among the Clovis passengers. Some Roswell residents planned to drive to Albuquerque for the evening speech.

Decorations Put Up At Exhibit Hall

The exhibit hall decorations were installed yesterday with flags and banners washed and bright. M. L. Long led cleanup of the building and grounds and oversaw painting including trash cans, as the exhibit area prepares for the fair two weeks from tomorrow.

Nation Playing Last Tribute To Speaker Bankhead

President Roosevelt and nearly 100 members of Congress escort the body of William B Bankhead on a special train toward Jasper Alabama for funeral services at 2 30 p m at the First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery beside his parents. Rep Sam Rayburn of Texas was elected to succeed him as speaker.

Knox Says Britain Has Chance To Win War

Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox told reporters in San Diego that Britain now has a better than even chance to defeat Germany and that invasion success depends on British air power. He praised the fleet maneuvers off Hawaii and said Atlantic sea bases leased from England would be readied under a 25 million dollar appropriation with airfields and submarine, destroyer, and cruiser bases planned.

Threat blows up Remington plant in Bridgeport

Bridgeport authorities and Remington Arms Company guards responded after an anonymous tip warned of a potential explosion at the Remington Arms plant. Works manager James H. Chasmar expressed little credence in the threat, noting the protection service of 68 guards and no planned increase. The plant manufactures .30 caliber armor piercing and tracer cartridges for the US government with large British orders.

Miles Says E G P Road To Be Oiled

County Commissioner Harry Puryear reported a government wire stating the East Grand Plains road will be completed soon. The route from the Dexter highway to the Oasis cotton gin will be blacktopped for about 2 1/4 miles.

Chavez Assured Of Nomination In Bitter New Mexico Primary

Senate challenger Dempsey charged voters faced intimidation while Chavez claimed the opposition spent money ruthlessly. Unofficial returns favored Chavez as two federal probes loom, one on Hatch Act violations and another on campaign expenditures. FBI agents began inquiries in Santa Fe amid talk of investigations by the Senate committee.

Names for goodwill trip sought by chamber of commerce

All business firms signed up for the second Chamber of Commerce goodwill trip must notify the chamber early tomorrow morning with their representatives so badges can be prepared. Bergdoll Ordered to Serve Full Prison Terms

Federal Judge John C. Knox ruled Grover Cleveland Bergdoll must serve the full five year army court martial sentence from 1920 and the additional two year 1939 flight sentence. He upheld that at the time Bergdoll was court martialed a state of war existed between the United States and Germany despite hostilities having ceased.

Willkie Appeals Against Roosevelt Third Term

On a Willkie campaign train bound for Amarillo Texas he told crowds that a Roosevelt third term would end the American system of government. He warned that democracy could be destroyed by extending one man's tenure and urged Democrats Republicans and independents to limit power. He had earlier spoken at Coffeyville Kansas and Tulsa Oklahoma emphasizing Jeffersonian democracy.

Weather forecast for four states with scattered storms

New Mexico shows partly cloudy skies with intermittent showers in the central mountain range westward and scattered afternoon or evening thunderstorms in the east portion through night and Wednesday. Colorado expects partly cloudy conditions tonight and Wednesday with scattered showers in mountain areas.
