Night College Set For Base Personnel

Walker Air Force Base announces night college classes for personnel beginning October 7 with registration September 23 at the education office and September 24 at Roswell High School. Courses from Eastern New Mexico University cover business and economics language literature arts education social studies psychology mathematics science and general education. Blind Girl's Fund Nears $2,000 Mark

The Teresa Aldinger Fund for a five year old blind girl headed to Baltimore for delicate eye surgery near $2,000. Total stood at $1,939.76 with many local donors including Brownie Emerson H. T. Lincoln County Fair Teems With Festivity And Honors

About 1,300 people attended the Lincoln County Fair in Capitan over Friday and Saturday. Corona 4-H Club led with top group honors. Ronnie Reynolds won grand champion fat lamb and the champion fine wool award. Miss Sherril Perkins of Corona was crowned Fair Queen.

Old Timers Picnic Brings 200 to Chaves County Event

Roswell area residents gathered for the Chaves County Old Timers picnic amid concurrent Lincoln County and Lovington fairs. Walden Bassett was elected president for the coming year while Ce cil Bonney became secretary and Mrs. Charles Porter re elected vice president. A long registration list noted arrivals dating from 1874 to 1958, with many in Roswell, Portales, Carlsbad, and Cuba.

Melvin E. Lorton, 45, was struck by lightning at Walker Air Force Base while reaching for a truck handle and remains seriously ill. Hail and high winds in Chavez County caused extensive damage to crops on 10,000 to 12,000 acres, with grain bins toppled and a barn and granary demolished at local farms.

Tornado Kills Woman Near Konawa Oklahoma

A tornado struck the Sacred Heart area north of Konawa killing Mrs. Jewell Campbell who lived five miles northwest of Konawa. The storm left a four mile wide path south of the Campbell home as it touched ground after a sighting ten miles east of Wewoka amid severe thunderstorms.

Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko arrives in New Jersey jet

Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko flew into MacGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey aboard a Russian jet to take personal charge of the Soviet UN delegation. The streamlined aircraft completed the Moscow to New York run in about 18 hours with two fuel and rest stops, faster than the first flight.
