A violent wind and rain storm battered Philadelphia and New York causing extensive property damage, uprooted trees, and flooded cellars. Winds reached eighty miles per hour and a record rainfall of 5.54 inches flooded streets and disrupted transport. In St Louis the expo crowd swelled to a peak during the day with a grand parade and water carnival planned at night.
Stockholders of Standard Oil received 5 percent quarterly checks today, bringing the year to date dividends to 29 percent. The company’s capital stock is 97.5 million dollars and today’s distribution was 4.875 million, with John D. Rockefeller receiving 1.95 million.
The Republican state convention endorses Governor Peabody noting approval of his administration and urging citizens to support him. It defends labor rights and unions while denying unlawful actions, and nominates Frank W Higgins for New York governor.
The Western Grocery Company and the Texas A and M College at College Station report Professor Carson, a renowned Texas educator since 1888, is visiting the Valley to investigate farms orchards and alfalfa fields and will prepare a general appraisal for Roswell and the Valley. Rose and wife, Arnold Morrison, Mrs. Alter Chisum, D. Birch Jackson and wife and son, Miss Lou Shields, Mrs. L. Bradley and son Palmer, Joseph Bach of the C B Q advertising department, and Manager Simpson of Amarillo. Mr. Dean of Owensboro has been here three weeks hoping the climate change would aid his wife. Clements and sons will be met at Amarillo by Mrs. Clements to accompany them to the fair. Hamilton plans to visit Texas points before returning.
In St Louis on September 15 officials reported a near total halt in activity as public offices, stores and factories closed in response to the mayor's request. The measure kept residents at home or away from workplaces within the city limits as the world’s fair events unfolded.
Indianapolis Sept 15 Speaker Cannon began a three days campaign trip through Indiana and Ohio with stops today in South Bend. He will also speak in Columbus and Dayton this week before heading to West Virginia next week and Maryland the following week for the Republican campaign kickoff.
Chicago reports the Pullman car works shut down and about 7000 employees idle. The closure has been gradual over three weeks with complaints that high wages caused the stoppage.

Mrs Walter Chisum departs for the World’s Fair in St Louis to attend the Eastern Star National meeting. She acts as proxy for Mrs Alice Mansard of Albuquerque, Grand Matron for New Mexico, with Mrs Chisum secretary of Roswell Chapter and assistant Grand Matron for New Mexico. J W Stockard returns from Chicago after visiting Cleveland and Akron and notes his nine passenger automobile costing about three thousand dollars will be used on the Torrance route.
Saturday noon and evening the Ladies Aid Society of the Christian church will give a chicken pie dinner in the building formerly occupied by the Morrison restaurant. Everybody is cordially invited to attend. Remember the place and date.
Yesterday afternoon E. O. Creigh, former proprietor of the Record, noted a well where the water rose forty inches above the casing. It stands as one of the largest wells in the region.
In a close contest the doctors edged the bankers by eleven pins. Dr. Veal rolled 44 pins in one game while Smith led the bankers with 43, making the bout highly exciting.
W M Reed of Roswell seeks the sender of Tracy telegrams demanding 31 cents in collection charges. The message from F G Tracy urges Reed to leave Carlsbad water and let it come, a note tied to a school yard dispute that aroused local attention yesterday.

Des Moines reports five men who robbed the Rock Island Chicago Kansas City train Tuesday night were found hiding in a hay stack near Winfield south of Columbus Junction. A muscatine posse pursued by special train reached the scene. E. O. Creighton confirms a large well near county and notes drilling down 970 feet with water showing 46 inches over casing.
