Attack on Arkansan in Red Sea Damages Ship

The Arkansan, an American freighter of 6,997 tons built in 1921, was hit by shell fragments during a heavy air raid over Suez on Sept 11 in the Red Sea area. No casualties were reported. The ship, owned by American-Hawaiian Steamship Co., was registered in New York and possibly carrying materiel to allied forces in the Middle East.

Nazis Fail In Baltic Sea Landing At Kronstadt

Stockholm dispatch reports Aftonbladet quoted Soviet radio as saying a German sea landing near Kronstadt failed after five storm boats were sunk by Russian fire. The broadcast also claimed a German assault on Oeses island off Estonia and another attack on Dargee were repulsed as Russians held firm.

Dorothy Reno, 19, of Artesia, has been missing since September 5. Local officers report she left home with Joseph Myron Christie, 23, who returned to Artesia alone. Christie is jailed in Chaves county for investigation after giving conflicting accounts of the disappearance. The two left Artesia in a cream colored 1935 Ford coach with dark brown fenders and New Mexico license 75-115.

Five Roswell Selectees to Be Inducted Sept 24

Five Roswell selectees plus Samuel Ford will be sent to Santa Fe on September 24 for induction. The group includes Jose Sanchez Miller Order No S-1601 Ernesto G Burciago Order No 1612 Samuel Willis Myler Order No 1620 Ysabel Anaya Carmona Jr Order No 1708 and Jesse Alvin Wallace Order No 1711. The S prefix marks second registration men aged 21 by July 1 1941. Jose Sanchez Miller is the first from the second registration to be selected.

Tropical Storm Flings Toward Louisiana Coast

A tropical storm moved toward southwest Louisiana threatening large maneuvers in the Bayou region.
