Balloonists abort cross Atlantic flight plan in Iceland attempt

Two New Mexico balloonists headed to Iceland after aborting their bid to cross the Atlantic. Weather Service official Mike Leavitt said the craft would land in Iceland to avoid sea ditching as helium loss and ballast issues threaten the flight. The Navy tracked the craft. the report notes local history figures and a Roswell residency.

A 33 year old father of three remains missing ten days after a Sept 1 outing. Blood in his car trunk and a black briefcase are being tested for a possible link. City bond election turnout estimate from county clerk

County Clerk Joyce Walker estimates 50 percent turnout for the city bond election on Tuesday. With 20 322 registered voters in 13 city precincts the expected voters are 10 161 though some residents outside city limits will not be eligible to vote on the issues.

Roswell Bond Election Seeks High Turnout and Voters’ Support

County clerk notes turnout above normal for bond elections as residents express anger over water and sewer rate hikes. In 1976 Roswell had 6,169 voters of 19,768 registered. Polls run 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday with results at City Hall after polls close. bond totals 4.25 million for streets drainage and parks.

Grizzly Adams Crew Plans Ruidoso Area Visit

The Grizzly Adams production advances plans to film in the Ruidoso area with an advance crew arriving this week. Schick Sunn Classic Pictures has a U S Forest Service permit to use forest land near Bonito Lake for animal scenes involving about 50 animals, including three grizzly bears. Cast includes Dan Haggerty and Denver Pyle while 35 to 85 crew members work through late December with actual shooting around October 1.
