Voters weigh a $950000 county bond issue with $750000 for courthouse improvements and $200000 for expanding the county health office. Eight votes reported at Goddard High School polling place by 10 a.m. Cost to property owners would average 96 cents per $1000 assessed. Bonds repayable over 15 years. Results expected tonight.
Roswell officials announced testing by Boeing and Lockheed at the RIAC starting Oct 13 with 30 Boeing personnel and later about 40 Lockheed staff. Separate plans call for U S Air Force tactical maneuvers Brainerd said Oct 20 to Nov 5, 15 miles from Roswell with no runway operations.
The Legislative Finance Committee rejected the Personnel Board plan for a seven percent average pay increase, estimating a 6.2 million dollar yearly cost. Board chair Ray Powell said salaries show New Mexico lags in competitiveness, while Sen. Aubrey Dunn urged including fringe benefits and job security in the assessment.
Atty Gen Elliott Richardson agreed to allow a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee to read FBI summaries of national security wiretaps to aid confirmation hearings on Henry Kissinger as Secretary of State. Chilean forces seized the presidency in a palace assault amid a palace siege. Allende refused to resign as military units surrounded Santiago.
Chaves County commissioners approve subdivision regulations during a regular courthouse meeting. Chairman Jim Goodrum notes most public hearing suggestions were adopted except for highway department concerns. State agencies including the State Engineers Office and EPA offered recommendations during August hearings.
Roswell officials heard Frank Tracy of the reorganized Humane Society explain plans to operate an animal shelter with county support funds. Commissioners will consider an ordinance hearing on adopting animal control rules set for Sept. 27 and discussed civil defense, granting bids, road issues, and subdivision regulations.
Chaves County commissioners announced Marshall Pierson as Thompson’s successor after a Saturday interview. Pierson, a Roswell resident with Air Force experience, will step into the role as Tommy Thompson leaves Sept. 30 for a plastics plant in Phoenix. Thompson and retired Ken Dennis will train Pierson.
Chaves County has not awarded bids to Leonard Motor Co of Albuquerque in the past year. The firm under investigation by the Legislative Finance Committee prompted examination of all county records statewide due to information from Dona Ana County about continuous awarding of bids to the heavy equipment firm.
