Soviet forces report 12 mile gains on the central front near Smolensk and Gomel, claiming to pierce German lines and inflict heavy losses while Berlin and Moscow exchange confirmations. Battles extend from the Karelian isthmus to the Black Sea with Leningrad under bombardment and Odessa sees heavy fighting.
Santa Fe Northwestern Railroad seeks ICC authority to abandon 35.8 miles of its 37 mile Bernalillo to Gilman line after a $599,281 deficit and $90,000 flood damage. A 1.2 mile section would remain as a Bernalillo spur serving the New Mexico Timber Company.
Readings show 24 hour intervals ending 11 30 a m with highs up to 77 and lows near 59. Normal values for the date are a high of 85 and a low of 58. Precipitation totals are 0 for the 24 hour period and 0 52 for the month to date with year to date 21 68. Sunrise is 5 39 and sunset 6 10 giving a day length of about 12 5 hours.
Civil defense leaders in Roswell prepared for a statewide blackout test tomorrow night as they finalize plans at yesterday's meeting. The group adopted a detailed schedule for the drill and organized units to respond to simulated air attack scenarios during the exercise.
Alert calls for immediate street clearance as long blast signals bomber sighting toward Roswell. Short blasts mark planes near city and require lights off. All clear ends blackout, lights on and normal activity resumes.
At yesterday's meeting Col. D C Pearson No M M I superintendent stated cadet plans for a tactical defense against attacking planes were abandoned because the war department forbids firing tracer ammunition at army planes. Activity remains in civilian defense departments.
Enthusiastic response to the Defense Stamp sale at Roswell High School was reported by Principal Paul H. Deaton. Stamps were sold in home rooms this morning and sales will continue weekly on Thursdays. Students hope to save $1 weekly to buy two Defense Bonds by year end.
H G Butler of San Francisco, named consulting engineer for the New Mexico Public Service Commission, said regulation of privately owned utilities can be achieved with minimal confusion. State chairman G S Carter welcomed Butler to help keep the commission out of pitfalls as three days of discussions on control law wrap up and utilities pledge to discuss rate revisions in informal hearings.
Formal notice from Brig Gen Muir S Fairchild confirms War Department approval of a site about four and a half miles south of Roswell New Mexico covering about 2640 acres for an Air Corps Station. The letter praises Roswell’s land donation and cooperation and notes future talks on radio facilities and rights of way.
Dayton Talmage of Roswell is slated to be next president of the New Mexico Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association as the group nears its annual convention. Taos was chosen as the site for the 1942 convention, with officer elections the final order of business.
A collision occurred one quarter mile south of Hagerman at 6 30 last night involving cars driven by Mr Baker and Mr Byres. Both vehicles were damaged. Patrolman Miles investigated the accident.
Moscow dispatch reports the Red Army’s counter moves penetrate up to 12 miles into German lines on the central front and repulse a German Finnish attempt to cut the Leningrad Murmansk rail line. Red Star says Leningrad approaches are pressed, with a village identified only as Y attacked for five days and held. Kiev and Odessa battles persist as Germans suffer heavy losses amid a steel ring siege.
President Roosevelt forms a fact finding board to probe the threatened nationwide railroad strike of 1,250,000 workers over wages. Dean Wayne Lyman Morse of Oregon heads the panel with notable academics and a Rockefeller official among its members. The board meets in Chicago to set sessions and determine when to report. Meanwhile 3,000 coal miners in four Panther Valley colleries stay away in protest over union dues, with 5,500 total across Hazleton area by morning as production halts and three mines close. A pending strike by AFL engineers against Missouri’s Union Electric is being negotiated in Washington, with potential power cuts for St Louis and surrounding states if unresolved.
Major John C. Horton of the Army Air Corps said construction of the Roswell air base may begin in four to six weeks. Horton and Captain Reed of Moffett Field discussed plans with district engineer Major Stratton in Caddo Colorado. Roswell officials noted the site survey and architecture fitting local town design as well as practice bombing range locations for the new advanced training school.
The Dodgers and Cardinals opened a decisive three game set with solo pennant implications. White outdueled Fitzsimmons as St Louis jumped on the board late and built a 4 0 lead before the Dodgers answered. Boston also fell to Pittsburgh 7 5 in the opener of a doubleheader.

Two men pled guilty before District Judge James B McGhee in a case involving a white girl. Verne Reynolds received 10 to 13 years for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and was also guilty of other charges with $1500 bond on the assignation charge. A C Y plead to contributing to the delinquency of a minor and encouraging assail, receiving one year on each charge to run concurrently. Samuel Alvarez was sentenced to two years for assault.
Roosevelt county farmers issued a call for 500 harvest hands to gather broomcorn beans and tomatoes this month. A shortfall occurred after fewer than 30 workers from San Miguel county were available, according to the state employment service.
Jim Gonzales proprietor of La Mexicana Bar George Chevarria and Simon Mimijares were held to district court under $500 bond each after a preliminary hearing before Pat O Neill J P for charges from a fight at La Mexicana Bar on the morning of August 28. Gonzales faces a deadly weapon charge for a pistol threat Chevarria charged with assault with a deadly weapon knife Mimijares charged with assault with a deadly weapon bottle. Hearing began yesterday and finished this morning.

President Roosevelt prepared a wide covering foreign policy radio address for tonight at 9 p m EST described by White House press secretary Stephen Early as all encompassing with no unanswered questions. He will also focus on the Russian aid issue meeting Soviet ambassador Constantine Dumansky and secretary Hull and canceling tomorrow morning's press conference for the first meeting with the American mission to Russia led by W Averell Harriman.
Carrizozo New Mexico September 11 a decomposed body of an unidentified man was found by hunter C E Kelley near Luna about 26 miles north of Carrizozo. A coroner's jury cited death from some mysterious cause. A shirt shoes eyeglasses and overalls lay nearby with the body. The sheriff kept the false teeth as a clue to identity. A cut behind the right ear reaching jugular was thought possibly from a fall on rock. No missing person could be linked yet.
The Columbia Broadcasting System will air Saturday September 13 from 7:15 to 7:45 PM Mountain Standard Time a program titled The States and the Defense Program Governors Lehman Dixon Stassen Olson will speak from New York Alabama Minnesota California respectively in the scheduled broadcast.
