Reagan shifts to sanctions on South Africa

President Reagan ordered execution of most anti-apartheid provisions despite opposition in Congress. Carroll named southern zone commander for state police

Capt. Bob Carroll 47 of the Las Cruces district will be promoted to major and take charge of the southern zone headquartered in Las Cruces. He replaces M J Payne, moved from chief of the state Police Department, as the board shifts headquarters from Roswell to Carrolls city of residence.

Artesia Boat Tragedy In Lake McMillan Fatal Drowning

The body of 55-year-old Frank Muniz was recovered by state police divers at Lake McMillan south of Artesia after he entered the water to rescue his son Frankie Muniz who fell in while fishing with him. The son died. the father was pronounced dead by the Eddy County medical examiner at 2:30 p.m. Local officers and four civilians assisted in the search.

Beaverhead County Emergency Number Omitted From New Directories

In Dillon Montana Sheriff Rick Later says the 1 800 number for emergency services 1 800 722 2333 was omitted from new Butte area telephone directories due to a mixup. Officials printed 5000 orange stickers and distribute them locally to spread awareness. The sheriff notes growing usage as residents learn the number.

Pickens optimistic about oil recovery slow but sure

Chief uses car to stop Roswell drug bust

Roswell police say a Mexican national Juan Lopez, 37, of Juarez, was arrested after a high speed chase when Chief Steve Wisniewski rammed Lopez’s car to stop him fleeing. Lopez faced charges of distribution, conspiracy and aggravated assault on an officer. an accomplice Concepcion Holguin, 28, was charged with trafficking and accessories. The undercover buy totaled $86,000 for heroin judged at 90 percent purity, with a potential street value of $8.8 million.
