Community groups fund fire ramp at Jaycee Center

Roswell Council Member Stiles Mocked With Nickname

Roswell city councilman L. C. Stiles, famous for questioning during meetings, received a playful nickname from a fellow council member at Tuesday’s session after a practical joke about his nameplate. The item notes Stiles has not yet seen the film Jaws, now showing in a local theater.

City OKs Talk Time Despite Grievance Rules

City manager Robert J. Owen told the council that employees may speak with the mayor or council at any time, saying the grievance provision was misinterpreted. Mayor Smith then asked for a resolution to strike the contested section at the October meeting. The council also funded 50 percent of the Bicentennial celebration and approved a fair license and picnic permit for the Eastern New Mexico State Fair.

Chappell named director of Deferred Giving at NMSU Las Cruces

John Chappell of Chaves County has been named director of Deferred Giving for New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He will start Oct. 6 and plans to encourage bequests trusts and planned gifts to support scholarships research and public service. President Gerald W. Thomas praised him as a highly regarded asset to the program.
