Old Timers Honor Flight at New Mexico Church Meeting

One hundred forty three New Mexico pioneers attended the annual Old Timers Day at the M. E. Church, South. Dr H C Henderson preached at the 11 oclock service before a noon dinner. Toastmaster Dan H Wilmot steered remarks by speakers including J W Tully Fred Pfingston Elza White James F Hinkle Zeb Chewning Ernest Nelson and L L Johnson. The group represented 22 states the District of Columbia and three foreign countries with Texas leading at 48 attendees.

Neal Myers Freed by Jury in Mills Murder Case

Neal Myers, a University of Oklahoma junior, was acquitted in Norman of murder in the death of Marian Mills, 19, the campus beauty queen. The jury of farmers returned the verdict Saturday night and Myers planned to seek work rather than enroll this fall.

Portales Seeks More Relief From Federal Bureau

A Portales delegation led by R. G. Bryant visited Santa Fe on September 10 to press the federal relief bureau for additional aid. Accompanying him were Mr. and Mrs. Orin Beatty and Seth Alston seeking swift action for their area.

Dogs Use Trail in Slaying of Mrs Tapia in Santa Fe

Blood hounds from the state penitentiary trailed Mrs. Josefita Tapia for 200 to 300 yards to car tracks before the scent went cold. Authorities believe she was taken from a car near her Tapia home on Tuesday night after leaving a taxicab. Detectives and police, with state patrolmen, pursue a vehicle description as they investigate the murder on a road leading to the Albuquerque highway.

Prison revolt near Stateville leaves two inmates dead

In Joliet Illinois on September first two prisoners died and another was wounded during a failed escape from Stateville prison yard. Guard William Pentosky was shot in the arm as the four men seized him and fled toward a tunnel under the clothing plant before the locomotive escape attempt. Frank Souder of Benton Illinois a life sentence for kidnapping led the group with accomplices Frank Bellinger and Fred Barry both imprisoned for robbery. The violence erupted as they tried to force entry to the factory area and gain freedom aboard a switch engine.

Tingley Visiting Portales for Democratic Meet in Pecos Valley

Albuquerque Mayor Clyde Tingley, noted as a possible Democratic gubernatorial candidate, will depart Albuquerque Tuesday night for Portales to address a Young Democrats meeting Friday. En route he will interview party leaders and stop at Roswell, Artesia, Hobbs, Lovington, and Vaughn on the east side of New Mexico.

Fire Damages Three Gallup Businesses Early Morning

A spectacular pre dawn blaze swept three north side business houses in Gallup New Mexico causing about 8000 dollars in losses. The uninsured buildings housed an Indian trading store owned by Mrs W H Hanns a blacksmith shop once run by city councilman L H Miller and a Japanese restaurant. Origin of the fire was not known.

Hyde Park Sept 10 AP President Roosevelt plans to reorganize the National Recovery Act on a long term basis. He expects a call from Gen Hugh S Johnson to discuss a board to replace Johnsons one man rule. Roosevelt wants Johnson to continue temporarily while new legislation is crafted for the next Congress.

The Maine election opens a week of primaries as 10 states begin voting for representatives. Roswell Territory Heads Named At Code Meeting

At an El Paso code meeting for sheet metal and roofing industries, Paul Carrigan was named representative for the Roswell territory and Co C Jenkins was named local code representative for roofing. A future Roswell meeting will finalize local organization and policies with Harry Stanger of Dallas directing. Both Carrigan and Jenkins from Roswell attended.

Lamson New Trial Report Deemed Fabrication

San Francisco Sept 10 AP reports that California supreme court decided to grant a new trial for David A Lamson former Stanford University press executive convicted of slaving his wife. Chief Justice Waste called the reports complete fabrication noting the case has not been considered by all court members an opinion has not been written or assigned.

Southeast NM Grazing Assn Meets in County Courtroom

A large crowd of stockmen gathered in the county courtroom to discuss grazing under the Taylor bill and to choose a delegation for a Friday Albuquerque meeting with assistant Interior Secretary Chapman. The entire board was named as delegates, including B C Mossman and G B Armstrong of Roswell, plus members from Carlsbad Lovington Corona and others. W H Johnson was elected to fill a vacancy from R C Worswick’s death. Capt B C Mossman chaired the session. stockmen were urged to attend Albuquerque.
