SNCC Leader Carmichael waives hearing on Atlanta riot charges

Stokeley Carmichael national SNCC chairman waived a preliminary hearing on inciting a riot charge and was bound over to the Fulton County grand jury. He faced state and city charges after a riot in Summerhill. Police and city officials vowed full prosecution of those involved. Others arrested included William Ware Bobby Vance Walton and two SNCC members later bound over to a grand jury. Residents formed a Good Neighbor Club denouncing violence.

American Fliers Battle Infiltrators Near Saigon

United States fliers strafed an infiltrating Viet Cong group near Saigon as clashes erupted along a canal on the city’s southern edge. Police said about 30 attackers crossed the canal into the 4th Precinct area amid a broader surge of violence aimed at disrupting Sunday's elections.

Motor Fuel Contracts Awarded by Chaves County

Chaves County commissioners awarded one year fuel supply contracts to two Roswell firms to cover four delivery sites from Oct. 1, 1966, to Sept. 30, 1967. McIntyre Oil Co. serves Roswell and Dunken with gasoline 15 and 14 cents per gallon and diesel 9.69 and 12 cents. Ray Bell Oil Co. delivers at Hagerman and Kenna with gasoline 12.759 and 14.5 cents and diesel 10.5 and 11.25 cents. A planning and zoning report was presented and a request for asphalt sealing of 16 city blocks was discussed.

Old Timers Group to Meet Here Sept. 17

The 61st annual New Mexico Old Timers Assn gathering is set for September 17 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Roswell Cahocca Park. Attendees must have lived in New Mexico 30 years or lived in the state 30 years ago. Lunch at noon features beans onions bread pickles coffee and paper goods provided by the club.
