Cambridge Wins Great International Boat Race

Cambridge won the Putney to Mortlake boat race by two lengths over Harvard with a fast start at 42 strokes per minute and a sustained lead. Harvard fought to the end but Cambridge maintained the advantage as crowds cheered the English course record.

Rome reports Francis X. Wernz of Germany elected General of the Society of Jesus to succeed the late Father Martin. A papal sanction is required to finalize the selection. The new leader’s election followed two ballots and was announced to the Vatican.

Rockefeller Cases Overruled as Motions to Quash Are Denied

Judge Baker overruled motions to quash information against John D. Rockefeller and all Standard Oil cases. Pleas in abatement were denied, defendants given until next Tuesday to file motions. Refinery Destroyed by Fire in Denver Loss Reported

Fire of unknown origin leveled the Boston and Colorado Smelting Co refinery at Argo near Denver last night. The blaze caused an estimated loss of 300000 with bullion valued at about 75000 melted or destroyed.

Independent State Ticket Nominated by California League

The California state convention of the Independent League nominated William K. Langdon for governor and set a full state ticket. P. Bowen named secretary J. E. Henderson treasurer and E. Gibbany as district official. The Pecos Valley Sunday School Association meets today at the Christian church with major sessions tomorrow. Mary Foster Bryner of Peoria Illinois arrives to lead.

Railroad Collision Near Wheeling Kills Two and Injures Ten

Two people died and ten were injured in a head on collision of B&O passenger trains at Woodland on the Ohio river division. Firemen Richard Parsons and Edward Wangel were killed while Engineer Dillon was fatally injured. The wreck occurred on a bridge over Fish Creek, 24 miles south of Wheeling, Virginia.

Dream Sermon Preacher Posts Funeral as Reality

Newark New Jersey September reports Rev Oscar H Braune pastor of the German Church conducted a funeral in a dream which was later used in actual events. The corner store room opposite the post office is to be rented soon. Payton Drug Book and Stationery Co has rented the Garst building under construction and will move in when finished with enlarged space.

County commissioners hear Major Locklear saloon case

In a rare session the Taos county commissioners sat as a court to hear Major Locklear's defense against a petition to revoke the Lake Arthur saloon license. Chief Justice Wm Atkinson and associate justices presided as evidence was weighed, but the license was not revoked. The case closed with a cautionary lecture to the defendant.

Open Shop Wins at San Francisco as Strike Ends

In San Francisco on September 8 the Open Shop faction prevailed as 72 members of unions recently striking against United Railway voted to return to work. President Calhoun had aimed to retain strike breakers in employment amid the dispute with stationary firemen.

Roswell Sunday School Union forms with 100 attendees

The Sunday school organization met at Southern M E church and formed the Roswell Sunday School Union. Officers were elected for a three-meeting schedule yearly in January May and October. New York banks reported a legal reserve shortfall of 6,577,920 dollars in today’s Clearing House statement, the largest deficit since 1893 when bank certificates were issued. Rumors swirl about Haynes & Bonney shifting priorities.

Stranded Fasted Man Found Near Roswell Stock Yards

A 30 year old man was found near the Riverside Stock Yards after a four mile trek in a near death state. He claimed a forty day fast would earn him a million dollars and extraordinary knowledge he could not explain. The man is believed mentally unbalanced. The report also notes the Hoo Hoos convention in Oklahoma City with expected attendance of over two thousand and bids for next year’s meeting from Baltimore Denver Niagara Falls and Cleveland.
