New Mexico Health Exchange May Cut Insurance Costs

New Mexico may see lower health plan costs through the state exchange with federal subsidies and more options than in private markets. State Insurance Superintendent John Franchini says premiums for subsidized buyers should be cheaper than current rates, and about 83 000 uninsured residents could enroll next year as enrollment begins next month. The Kaiser study reviewed plans in 18 jurisdictions, including New Mexico, with five insurers’ rates likely to be approved.

A 57-year-old man from Chaves County is hospitalized with West Nile Virus, part of a rising number of cases in New Mexico. The NMDOH confirmed the new infection and noted an 84-year-old San Juan County woman died from West Nile related encephalitis, the second NM death of 2013. See VIRUS, Page A3.

New Mexico Supreme Court to hear gay marriage case

The New Mexico Supreme Court set an Oct. 23 hearing on whether gay and lesbian couples can receive marriage licenses. The move follows county clerks seeking guidance after a district court ruling declared the denial unconstitutional. More than 900 licenses issued since Aug. 21 and several counties have followed.

J.O.Y. Centers serve seniors from four locations offering meals, transportation, housekeeping, caregiver support and social programs. Executive Director Charlotte Phillips notes 425 to 435 meals are delivered or served daily and emphasizes the value of veterans stories from WWII to Vietnam.
