Roswell city schools report 5 675 pupils enrolled on Sept 3, up 443 from Sept 4 1952's 5 232. The rise reflects about 842 percent year over year with district by school and grade figures showing added enrollment across all levels and special education.
Dr. Lee M. Thurston, 58, U. S. commissioner of education since July, died early today at Georgetown University Hospital. An Eisenhower appointee, he fought to restore funds to federal education appropriations and had just reviewed the 1954 55 budget. He had spoken in Nashville and Lansing and was formerly dean at Michigan State College.
Enrollment in Chaves County rural schools approaches 1,200, matching superintendent Carrol White’s forecast. Five of eight schools reported 1,160 students on Wednesday, with Walker leading at 566 and Littlefield the smallest at 113 among the five reporting.

At Panmunjom the Reds released Maj. Gen. William F. Dean and promised a record 275 Americans would be returned next day, part of the Korea War prisoner exchange. Dean, dusted and with white hair, rode a jeep home after three years in captivity and was to be flown to Japan for a medical checkup. He received the Taeguk Medal with gold star from President Syngman Rhee in Seoul.
The Civil Aeronautics Board received an application from Continental Airlines for authority to serve the Alamogordo Holloman area in New Mexico for a temporary period. Frontier Airlines had earlier sought the right to serve the same area.

A Chaves County Singing Convention will be organized Sunday at the Assembly of God Church Rayburn Flippo announced. Price's Creameries Inc seeks injunctive relief and damages against O K Gaston Mrs O K Gaston and the Borden Co alleging contract violations. Gaston moves to dismiss arguing lack of facts to entitle relief and that contract is personal to signers only. A separate motion seeks a bill of particulars to specify 12 alleged violations.
The four and one half million dollar Jemez dam nears its completion with a deadline of October 8, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. A formal dedication is planned for October or November.
The United States plans to propose postponing the decision on seating Red China at the United Nations. In Kilby Prison Alabama nurse Earle Dennison was executed for poisoning her infant niece Shirley Diana Weldon for insurance money. She spoke a forgiveness prayer, wore a denim dress, and was the state’s first white woman executed by electric chair. The case links to earlier Weldon tragedy and Polly Ann Weldon, with the governor denying mercy.

A. R. Treet of the Chaves County PMA committee says the state plan to cut feed dealers costs from four to two dollars per ton is impractical. A meeting with Roswell feed dealers was canceled after dealers questioned the proposed reduction, amid reports of an upcoming shift to a mixed feed program for emergency drought relief.

The Navy hospital ship Haven docks at San Francisco bringing 104 sick and wounded American repatriates from Communist prison camps. It also carries 371 other American servicemen wounded in Korea and anchored in San Francisco Bay.

An explosion at a gas pipeline regulator house eight miles north of Eunice left six men burned, one critically. G. W. Davis of Artesia suffers serious injuries and is treated at Lea General Hospital, while five Artesia men and Sam Hardy of Oil Center recover in Eunice clinics. Lost property includes the regulator house and two trucks. damage is about $10,000.
Dr. Henry Knox Sherrill the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church will visit Korea on September 12 and deliver a sermon to American servicemen on Sunday September 13 a church spokesman said. The trip follows an invitation from General Mark Clark for the Far East command.
Secretary of State Dulles publicly endorsed Konrad Adenauer, breaking U S tradition of non interference. The move drew criticism from Bonn and Sen Hill who warned outside influence risks German sovereignty and unity as elections loom.

Eleven agencies in the State Revenue Bureau reported an 7.8 percent increase in tax collections for the latest month, totaling 5,183,1327 compared with 4,804,943 a year earlier. The gains indicate higher revenue performance across state agencies.
