Berlin reports that a single German submarine sank six armed British merchant ships totaling 51,507 tons. The high command says Nazi air raiders struck hangars and assembly plants in southern England and set fires in Liverpool and other ports. A few British planes raided Berlin but caused no major damage locally.
Lembke Construction Company of Albuquerque won the bid to build a new 2 story brick and concrete telephone building south of the post office for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph. The project value is about 70000 dollars with completion required by March 1, 1941. Construction will begin promptly with a 40 by 60 foot footprint and a back 4 stall garage and storeroom. No changes to manual systems or personnel are expected.

The Associated Press reports heavy campaign activity in southern New Mexico for the first primary. Seven candidates toured the region with a Las Cruces joint rally. Chavez shifted from Silver City to Las Cruces for a speech with Kennedy, citing a manganese contract and job creation tied to defense needs.
Washington reports that all bases acquired from Britain in the destroyer trade can be used immediately by U S naval and air forces once base site limits are agreed. British protection may lessen after occupation, freeing ships for Europe. Start of limited use possible at once with destroyers or patrol planes. All bases have harbors suitable for destroyers and cruisers, with some fitting sea or land planes.
Two youths, Louis Stewart of Columbus, Georgia and Jim Moreland of Ohio, were arrested early today for hijacking and kidnapping taxi driver Charles J. Gray in El Paso. They allegedly forced Gray toward Alamogordo, rammed the taxi, and were captured after a wreck near Roswell. Moreland injured his chest while Stewart was unhurt. An FBI agent from Albuquerque was expected to arrive, and charges include bringing a stolen car into Chaves county.
The Lovington Chamber urges Roswell residents to attend the Lovington Rodeo on September 11 and 12 under the Lovington Calf Roping Club sponsorship. Mrs. Skelton Williams and Mrs. Robinson of Lovington promoted the event at a local visit.
Oil operators in Texas pursue stability during low gasoline demand after a 90 day proration order. Lon A. Smith of the railroad commission says the agency will not drastically amend the order unless needed to prevent physical waste. Officials note market demand would justify any changes.

In Bucharest King Carol seeks stability after an assassination attempt and orders General Ion Antonescu to form a new cabinet. Antonescu, released from Banat monastery amid anti cession protests, could lead a military dictatorship while Iron Guard activity is being suppressed. The palace is under heavy guard as shots were fired.
Adolf Hitler addressed 25,000 workers in Berlin pledging that Nazi bombs will rain on England nightly in retaliation for RAF raids. He warned that hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of bombs would fall on England as payback for the nuisance of nightly raids. The speech raised the prospect of a full aerial blitz against Britain as Germany masses air power for renewed attacks.
Advertising Club members enjoyed violin and piano solos by Elaine Frazier and Dorothy Lee and a talk by John Halter. Frazier and Deason will be heard in a concert at the Junior high school auditorium next Monday at 8 p m. Halter, Montgomery Ward manager, spoke on department store buying. Members voted to enter a float in the Eastern New Mexico State Fair opening parade. Judson Goodart led the program under President Joe Huff.

Building permits totaling $20 225 were issued at the city clerk s office during August. The year to date total is $258 920. August permits include three new houses at $2 000 or more each, a Standard Station at 2nd and Virginia costing $3 500, and an addition to the Palace Cleaners at $2 500. The year total excludes the new grade school building addition to Mark Howell school and two new buildings at N M M S as no permits were issued.
