Elizabethtown Origins and Early Boom Town History
In 1866 a copper ore discovery near Baldy Peak sparked a mining rush that created Elizabethtown, later Colfax County seat. Captain W. H. Moore opened a general store, drawing 400 residents by July and spurring a boom with sawmill, hotels, churches, and saloons. Water scarcity hindered mining until a 41 mile aqueduct from the Red River was built at a cost over $200,000 to supply the Moreno Valley placers.
