The Record's war extra issued shortly before six this morning was distributed free to subscribers at home and delivered by carriers. copies were also sold on the street.
Paris announced an ultimatum demanding Germany immediately stop aggression and withdraw troops from Poland with a pledge to aid Poland if refused. Berlin reported air raids as Germany moved into Poland while Warsaw appealed for aid from Britain and France. Britain and France mobilized and Chamberlain warned of war if terms are rejected.
Berlin reports Adolf Hitler announced Danzig would join the German Reich and ordered the army to meet force with force amid alleged Polish border violations. In a 36 minute Reichstag speech he cited reprisals and warned of air and gas responses, while saying Germany would act alone without foreign help. Forster proclaimed the reunification of Free City with Germany.
President Roosevelt told reporters he believes the United States can remain out of the European war and that the administration will try to keep the country neutral. He announced Hugh Wilson’s resignation as ambassador to Germany and said Wilson will take special duty in the State Department while noting no decision on a Berlin successor.
