Bruce Johnson age 42 and Shari Quam 22 travel to Tutuila American Samoa to scout uninhibited South Sea islands for a Crusoe like life. They aim to gather food, build shelter, and live with minimal possessions while filming the venture. They plan to fly to Fiji to inspect possible lands and have not chosen an island yet.
In University Heights Cleveland a 23 year old man Robert Batch shot himself in the chest after holding 19 year old Lida Caldwell captive at gunpoint since Saturday. Caldwell wounded but stable. Batch later died on arrival at Doctors Hospital. Police described a tense standoff with officers and a grown crowd outside the suburban apartment as they tried to talk him into releasing Caldwell. Batch's mother flew in from Johnstown Pennsylvania as the crisis unfolded.
Eight killed in New Mexico over the weekend in multiple crashes. State Police cited wintry weather, wet pavement, snowstorms, and crosswinds as contributing factors. An escaped Jacksonville convict, Elbert Landrey Nolan, was identified among the deceased.
Nine hunters and several officers were stranded as the season opener brought snow in northern New Mexico. Rescue teams sought five more in the Ocate area while others were found safe in Glorieta and Santa Fe regions. Weather hindered movement with three to ten inches of snow reported.

Dunlop of Sun Oil argues reserves in place are undervalued and favor a rate about a third of current. Anderson of Atlantic Richfield and Brockett of Gulf Oil back the push amid inflation and price pressures at the Independent Petroleum Association of America meeting.
