NMEA Proposes Spending Boost At Albuquerque Convention

The New Mexico Education Association opened its annual convention on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque. A proposed legislative program would raise state public school spending by 16.5 million dollars next year, including 10 million for teacher salaries and 240 thousand for nonprofessional staff. The plan also recommends 2.5 million to reduce teacher pupil ratios, hiring about 3 percent more teachers. It backs federal aid, the current teacher tenure law, and a base starting salary of 8 thousand dollars for degree teachers, with scales up to 16 thousand for masters holders. Three nominees were named for the NEA New Mexico director post: Jack Hall, James Stewart, and Miss Mary Gallagher. Potential sites for the 1967 spring council meeting include Farmington, Roswell, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, and Gallup.
