Four Free Democrat ministers quit Chancellor Erhard's cabinet over the budget, leaving him to govern with a minority. Salt Cedar Eradication Begins in New Mexico and Texas
The first phase of a 2.5 million salt cedar eradication project in New Mexico and Texas will start in January. Fred Hennighausen of the state engineer's office said the plan, studied by the Bureau of Reclamation for about 15 years, was authorized by Congress in 1964 but needed final funding approval. The effort aims to clear 70,000 acres along the Pecos River from Bitter Lakes area to near the Chaves County line, with initial work near Roswell if funds are approved. Landowners will be paid one dollar for rights of way, while about 50 dollars per acre is the estimated clearing cost, and annual control costs near six hundred thousand dollars are projected.
