Hospitals to lose uncompensated care coverage under new safety net plan
The 2014 remodel of the Sole Community Provider program shifts funds toward the Safety Net Care Pool, reducing coverage for uncompensated claims reimbursed by Indigent Health Care Services and increasing compensation for Medicaid claims. In Chaves County, Lovelace Health System ENMMC and La Casa Family Health Center are SCP participants. La Casa receives the most non SCP funding. Indigent funds for fiscal year 2013 totaled $4 million for Lovelace, $320,000 for ENMMC, and $400,000 for La Casa, with totals not covering all uncompensated claims. The reform aims to lower uncompensated care as Medicaid expands, but timing remains uncertain. The SCP program nationally receives about $270 million annually. Safety Net is slated for $200 million, $69 million for uncompensated claims, with remaining funds boosting Medicaid coverage. A shift to UC Pool may replace Indigent with a similar claim pool at some or all hospitals, potentially redirecting county tax contributions toward Safety Net with federal matching.

Paint the Town Pink Party Honors Survivors in Roswell
Joan Park of Capitan, a Roswell native, spoke at the Paint the Town Pink Party held at the Roswell Convention and Visitors Center. After mastectomy and chemotherapy, she said she is happy to be alive and grateful for the community’s care, as the event closed a month of activities.

Fund set up for injured Roswell officer Meredith
Roswell Police Detective Sergeant Steve Meredith was injured in a multi vehicle crash after assisting New Mexico State Police near mile marker 90 on US 285 South. A fund at Pioneer Bank in Roswell and other locations is set up to help with medical bills.

Fair makes legal services accessible
Roswell's Legal Fair drew 10 to 15 volunteer attorneys who offered free advice from 1 to 5 pm. By 2 pm over 50 residents sought help on family and employment law, contracts, housing, debt, probate, real estate, and personal injury. Judge Steven Bell said the event aims to help those who cannot afford lawyers. Christian Valvela praised the Roswell Adult Center venue after a 30 minute consultation.

Stand Down for Homeless Veterans reaches Roswell crowd
The Hispano Chamber of Commerce and partners held a Stand Down for Homeless Veterans in Roswell. The event offered food, job counseling, flu shots, other health services, and clothing from DoD surplus for rough sleepers this winter. David Sena said it was the first such Roswell event and hopes for more.
