Gunpoint Hijack Attempt Averted On Key West Flight 299

A Cuban exile on a Miami residence attempted to divert the Miami to Key West National Airlines Flight 299 to Cuba. He overpowered by crew and passengers but was removed and arrested by FBI agents. The plane carried 20 passengers, two stewardesses, and two pilots nearing the Florida Keys.

Roswell Considers South Water Well Field Over West

A Roswell technical subcommittee recommends pursuing a permanent south Roswell water well field rather than the west. Test wells in Blackwater Draw and Eight Mile Draw yielded mixed results with No 1 showing good quality water, No 2 poor quality, and No 3 highly salty. The group proposes targeted logging within ten miles south to identify a future development area and to test existing wells cooperatively with nearby farmers.

Adjudication Decree Sparks PVACD Meeting Debate

PVACD board members opposed a proposed final water adjudication decree for the Roswell Artesian Basin calling for meter installation on 1,700 wells by Jan 1, 1967. State Engineer Harlan Flint argued metering protects supplies and enables five year water accounting. Counting total pumpage, drought relief, and enforcement provisions, the decree will be reviewed ahead of a Dec 6 district court hearing.

Beer Huckstering Ban Lifted in New Mexico

Revenue Commissioner Max Gonzales announced the ban on selling beer from delivery trucks is lifted after new controls to protect the public. The prohibition had existed since the 1940s and was briefly reimposed in September for study. Only three wholesalers are said to be huckstering now with a $25,000 bond required for truck drivers.

Two blasts ripped the 496 foot Marine Devil freighter under conversion at Alabama Dry Docks shipyard injuring a number of people. elsewhere abroad a Santo Domingo anti U S protest sparked a burst of crowd control by U S troops.

Shoplifting Accusation Triggers Two Damage Suits

In fifth district court two damage lawsuits were filed. Thurman Tyler and his daughter Annie Mae sue S H Kress Co and Clyde Utley over a shoplifting search at a local Kress store on September 25 alleging willful wrongful conduct causing embarrassment and medical harm with damages of 25 000 12 500 actual and 12 500 punitive. Naomi Ruth Harris sues Ray Bell Oil Co and Harry Glenn Best for 24 550 over a October 7 traffic crash at Atkinson and Cherry claiming Best’s careless driving caused property damage medical costs and pain and suffering with jury trial demanded.

Air Power Named Key to Saving Plei Me Garrison

U S air power shovels and courage saved the Montagnard garrison at Plei Me 210 miles north of Saigon after a Viet Cong attack. Capt Harold M Moore 24 of Pekin Ill led the 12 man American team. he was wounded in the left shoulder. About 20 U S planes were shot up and two jets and two Skyraiders plus a jet bomber and 10 transports were put out of action for repairs.

President Johnson Signs Bill Report False Story

The White House announced Johnson had signed a $2 billion rivers and harbor bill, but officials said the measure had not reached his desk. Moyers later said the bill was en route from Washington and would be signed tonight. Johnson objected to a provision limiting presidential power and directing future project authorizations.

Klan Ties Tied to North Carolina Sheriff and Deputies

Sheriff Marion W. Millis of New Hanover County testified that he and six deputies joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1963 to gather intelligence but quit and could not obtain information to support arrests after a cross burning outside Wilmington's courthouse. He said some deputies remained enthused while others removed their names from the roll.

Power Off in Nashville Police Probe Death of Polio Victim

Audie Barrett an 11 year old polio survivor died in an iron lung after Nashville Electric Service cut power for non payment. NES said records show no one in the Barrett family was charged and no contact was made to arrange payment. An autopsy was authorized to determine the exact cause of death.

Freight Rate Hearing Postponed in New Mexico Case

The Interstate Commerce Commission postponed two weeks a hearing on New Mexico's complaint against the Southwestern Motor Freight Bureau. The Nov. 1 session in Santa Fe is rescheduled to Nov. 19. The SCC accuses higher rates on hauls to and from New Mexico, versus similar routes in other states, naming 168 trucking firms and the Dallas based bureau as defendants.

Airman Reports Beating At Alameda Cafe

An Airman from Walker AFB told city police he was knocked down and beaten by several men while entering a cafe at Alameda and Main around 2 a.m. Sunday. He said there was no prior argument or contact before the assault.
