October 26 report says American forces cleared the Bourgogne Forest north of Grand Pre driving a wedge into German lines. They captured the forest in rapid rushes after advancing near Bantheville and seizing high ridges following assaults on machine gun nests.

Severe storms in Kansas and Nebraska crippled wire communication across the middle west. Denver lost east links as eleven inches of snow and sleet near Grand Island toppled lines, with high wind halting rerouted connections. Officials warned there was no relief in sight this afternoon.

The casualty list shows Army totals: killed in action five, died of disease twelve, severely wounded thirty one, undetermined wounds one hundred thirty, slightly wounded twenty seven, died of accident and other causes three, missing in action six. Overall two hundred fourteen. Marine Corps totals: killed in action one, died of wounds five, died of disease seventeen, wounded in action severely three, missing in action fifteen, sick in hospital class D previously reported died of wounds one, sick in hospital previously reported missing three. Total forty five.

Training Camp Entrance at Camp Fremont Instructions

Major Barlow at the New Mexico Military Institute warns registrants from June 5 1917 and August 24 1918 classes to submit applications by November 14 while September 12 entrants may apply until November 25. Only 9 applications so far. New Mexico must fill 55 openings. Camp Fremont expected to host 20 000 officers in two months with pay and Army clothing. contact Major Barlow to discuss eligibility.

Bankhead inspection party to visit Roswell Sunday

Roswell plans a community turnout to greet the Bankhead highway inspection party at the Pecos bridge north of the city. The official party will tour proposed routes from Lawton to El Paso with local officials and engineers meeting them in Roswell. Influenza limits public events but residents are urged to attend and show support for the highway project.

Death of Dick Goodin A Pecos Valley Native

Clarence A. Goodin known as Dick died at 7:45 AM of influenza pneumonia at his parents home 513 North Missouri Roswell after a six day illness. Born July 6 1891 in Van Horne El Paso County Texas he was 27 last July. Raised in Roswell he worked at the Record newspaper from carrier to linotype operator and was a well regarded friend and employee. He leaves his parents three brothers Monte Burr Brown and two sisters Dolly and Pearl with funeral plans awaiting his father’s return from the Tannehill cattle ranch on the Indian reservation. A fraternal Elk sent a verse praising him and comfort to mourners.

Socialist deputy calls for German republic in Reichstag speech

In The Hague on October 26 Herr Ditman a socialist deputy in his first Reichstag speech after release from prison demanded the formation of a German republic. John Henry Harris to lie in state with military funeral

John Henry Harris son of Ada Harris died of influenza pneumonia while in service at Camp Mills New York. He will be given a military outfit at three o clock Monday afternoon at South Park. His body rested at Dilleys for ten days. He was a member of the motor rifle squad and ready for overseas duty. He left Roswell in June with the hundred young mechanics led by Tom Hall for Austin Texas.

Cadet Homer Hatfield Improves Amid Hospital Battle

G A Hatfield of Santa Fe arrives in Fresno to see his son Cadet Homer Hatfield who has been critically ill with influenza pneumonia for two weeks. The attending physician notes the miraculous fight against death was aided by the cadet’s clean life and abstinence from cigarettes and liquor. Mrs Hatfield remains at her son's bedside.
