George Prince ferry disaster recalled in Coast Guard inquiry
At 6 30 am on the George Prince ferry, 18 of 96 aboard survived as the 664 foot Norwegian tanker Frosta rammed and sank the craft near Destrehan Louisiana. George Lingo 32 escaped into the water after the collision as vehicles and passengers were tossed into the Mississippi River. Captain Kjell Slatten testified that multiple horn blasts went unanswered before the collision. The wreck occurred about 20 miles north of New Orleans in mild 50s weather with a brisk wind.
