The Loomis Armored Car Service vaults, touted as burglar proof fireproof and earthquake proof, leaked during a rainfall leaving several inches of water on the floor. Division manager Fred Rice called the situation worrisome and frustrating as valuables must be restacked to stay off the damp surface.
X ray technicians from New Mexico and West Texas travel to Roswell for the third annual New Mexico Society of X ray Technicians convention chaired by R E Humphries. The program includes a Friday science workshop at St. Marys Hospital a Saturday formal program with papers from Amarillo Albuquerque Carlsbad and Hobbs a mass X ray film exhibit Sunday at ENMM Center and social events hosted by Mrs. R E Humphries and The Knights of Pythias Hall is the site for the weekend banquet and entertainment sponsored by the American College of Radiology.
Gossamer strands, some about 50 feet long, drift from the sky and span telephone and power lines in Portales. Farmers report damage to broom corn and cotton fields during harvest. Explanations range from giant cobwebs to Sputnik. strands contain no metallic material and appear cobweb-like under magnification.
A new court record volume 59 began on October 18 in the district clerk's office. Record 58 started February 7 this year and closed October 16, spanning 635 pages.
Across New Mexico farmers faced delayed harvests as late heavy rain damaged cotton, peanuts, potatoes, onions, and hay. Cotton harvest lagged behind last year while peanut and potato quality declined. some counties saw potential losses exceeding tens of thousands of dollars.

Manchester England railway conductor Fred Bannister found a purse with 3829 pounds about 10721 dollars in a coach yesterday. A well dressed woman who claimed it later tipped him half a crown.
State Highway Commissioner Eber D. McKinley of Alamogordo held a firm stance against Army plans to close U S 70 for missile testing at night. The Highway Commission had refused the request previously and will consider a renewed appeal. The Air Force announced a successful rocket test reaching 1000 miles and reports suggest a second test at Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific.
Dr. Glenn Archer of Protestants and Other Americans United for Separation of Church and State spoke in Washington to New Mexico Baptists at their annual state convention urging greater effort to defend religious liberty.
The New Mexico Education Association council voted down a constitutional amendment that would have set up polls at the annual convention to elect a vice president. The current process nominates at the convention and mails ballots after the convention to choose the president.
Police say Ra ton Wholesale Liquor Co at 211 W Seventh St suffered a breakin overnight but no items were reported missing.
A special public meeting to learn about and discuss the United Nations is scheduled for tomorrow at 7 30 p m in the Roswell Chamber of Commerce. The event, part of United Nations Week, is chaired by Mayor E C Tucker with Mrs John C Martens as co chair and features a panel of visitors to UN headquarters.
Silas Gonzales 55 died in Presbyterian Hospital after injuries from a liquor truck crash near Cuba on Oct 11. State police reported the vehicle left the highway and overturned. The incident raised New Mexico's traffic death toll to 348 for the year.
William P. Rogers, deputy attorney general, named to head the Justice Department replacing Herbert Brownell Jr. Brownell resigns after 40 years in federal service. President Eisenhower accepts with regret and Brownell says he will return to private practice. Rogers, a Nixon adviser and civil rights advocate, says policies will align with past cooperation.
Lamar Floyd, Personnel Officer of the New Mexico State Highway Department, will speak at the Downtown Roswell Lions Club dinner this evening. The talk titled What Makes Our Highways Cost so Much will be at the Nickson Hotel at 6 p.m. Floyd has nearly 20 years with the department and has led personnel after earlier work in Accounting and Safety. he also served as Executive Secretary of the Governor's Traffic Safety Coordinating Committee on loan to the department.
The leaders announced basic agreement on pooling scientific and weapons development work. Two expert groups will propose recommendations in nuclear cooperation and military defense, focusing on missiles and rocketry, with the aim of strengthening the free world against Soviet power.
J. D. Taylor, 27, Houston, entered an innocent plea yesterday in justice court to two counts alleging attempted felony and grand larceny. The charges stem from a razzle-dazzle scheme at Furr Food Store on West Second Street on Sept. 27, with a trio of Negro suspects aiming to steal about $1,300, and White House Grocery on the same date reporting $275 loss. Bond set at $3,000 total.
W B McAlister Portales state president of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau told Chaves County members that 25 years of government activity in farming has brought a 23 percent drop in net farm income over six years. He urged focus on free markets, price changes, and expanding demand through education and trade while stressing research and production efficiency. A strong turnout heard the address.
Police court records show six cases today all for intoxication. Yesterday’s tally counted six cases as well with five intoxication and one vagrancy.
Chaves County schools closed at noon yesterday will resume classes Monday morning Oct 28 after the New Mexico Education Association convention in Albuquerque opens today and ends tomorrow.
