Lawsuit seeks damages for libel by Klan figure

Houston Oct 24 A suit seeking 100000 dollars in damages was filed against Imperial Wizard Evans of the Ku Klux Klan in district court by George B. Kimbro former Grand Goblin of the Mississippi Realm. The claim says Evans published a false defamatory libel about Kimbro in a local paper on June 28. A similar 100000 suit was recently filed by Kimbro in federal court against Evans.

Dallas man gets death penalty for jailer’s death

Sydney Welk, wounded in an attempted jail break that killed jailer Willis Champion and condemned prisoner Charles Gaines, has been sentenced to death by a Texas jury. Welk’s attorneys indicated plans to seek a new trial.

Judge Lindsey cites illegal operations on minors in Denver

Denver October 24 Judge Ben B Lindsey told the grand jury that more than one thousand girls under seventeen were illegally operated on in Denver over the past year to prevent childbirth. He said he had personal knowledge of many cases and that the birth rate there has fallen by at least fifty per cent. He refused to name specific cases.

Martin E. Trapp of Muskogee is serving as acting governor of Oklahoma today. Balloting on the remaining twenty counts against Governor Walton will be set when the House convenes at ten this morning, with the Senate meeting at the same time.

Burning ground near Roswell draws curious visitors

A burning patch of ground about the size of a room has been observed near Roswell. Reported by Sheriff John C. Peck and Officer Rafe Dunnahoo, the area emits blue smoke and hot earth beneath cracks, with rumbling sounds heard from beneath. Isabel Eckles, New Mexico State Superintendent, announces the American Chemical Society Prize Essay Contest offering $10,000 in prizes and Yale and other college scholarships to top high and secondary school students nationwide. Walton Is Removed As Governor Of Oklahoma By Impeachment

Oklahoma City Oct 24 Governor J C Walton suspended by the State Senate in a special session after impeachment charges passed 80 to 17 in the lower house. Lieutenant Governor Martin E Trapp assumes control as Walton faces further charges including diverting funds and opposing a grand jury. Walton claims no comment while Trapp vows enforcement of laws. Trapp himself has prior impeachment history and anti-Klan stance.

Sixty Mile Gale Strikes Atlantic Seaboard

From Maine to Carolina a sixty mile gale lashed the coast for twenty four hours smashing breakwaters wrecking boats and flooding water fronts. The storm reached its peak last night and moved south today. Fear grows for the British ship Westmoreland with eighty aboard fourteen miles off the Delaware breakwater as many pleasure craft are washed away.

Wedding at the Revival at First Christian church

A large crowd gathered at the First Christian church for an evening featuring Mr Vawter’s photograph display and a public Bible drill led by Mrs Mize. Evangelist Vawter spoke on The Devil, its origin, and its actions in Roswell, urging restraint from gambling and dancing and condemning temptations affecting youth. A wedding ceremony was announced for tonight.

Final Plans For Roswell Halloween Party

Plans were announced for a municipal Halloween party to be held Halloween night by the Roswell Advertising club. The event, touted as the city’s greatest fair of its kind, will feature fungalore and an all inclusive, objection free program. Main Street between Second and Third will be roped off to accommodate crowds, with new features added and to be detailed later. The party aims for annual recurrence.

The New Mexico Military Institute and the State University Lobos meet in this city on November 22 in a highly anticipated football clash. Both schools boast strong teams. Captain Ogle Jones leads the Lobos as local interest mounts for the epochal Southwestern showdown. The 1920 Armistice Day game saw a 9 to 7 Lobos victory after a close contest.

Barnes circus to show in Roswell with Nusko the Mastodon

The Barnes circus arrives in Roswell with 1200 animals and 1800 people on three trains.
