Charles Arthur Floyd, famed outlaw known as Pretty Boy Floyd, is killed by lawmen on a North East Liverpool farm after a brief stop at the Conkle house. He was wounded by fifteen bullets, pursued by Melvin Purvis and agents, and died in a corn field near Beaver Creek Valley amid a quiet midwestern region.
The Jean Piccard flight ended in a tree top on a farm four miles west of Cadiz near Pike Peak school. Neither Dr. Piccard nor his wife Jeannette were injured. They landed instruments intact from a 40,000 foot ascent after a voluntary descent. A farm woman witnessed the landing and the bag reportedly was not badly damaged. Mrs. Piccard called the flight a success and noted the bag fell when coming down in a woods but instruments remained undamaged.
Washington reports George Baby Face Nelson now labeled public enemy number one after Pretty Boy Floyd's death. P L Rapkoch Republican State Chairman said Democrats in public office earning over 150 dollars monthly faced a 25 percent levy for campaign purposes, on top of existing 2 percent and 15 percent charges. He cited a Republican platform pledge to block compulsory political contributions by state employees.
Next Saturday October 27th is the last day to exchange four percent Home Owners Loan Corporation bonds for three percent fully guaranteed bonds. The three percent bonds are guaranteed as to principal and interest, while the four percent bonds are only guaranteed for interest. Exchanges are handled through the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, or can be forwarded via local banks.
Governor F C Johnson asked the federal government to remove C D Shawver from his post as state relief administrator citing inefficiency and irritations in relief handling. The request was sent in a telegram to Harry L Hopkins, national relief administrator, stating Shawver's administration has been a constant source of irritation.
S A Hardage of Amarillo, injured in an automobile accident south of Roswell, was taken home today by ambulance from St. Marys hospital where he had been treated.
Services for J P White will be at the family home at Second and Sea tomorrow at three o'clock with Dr A D Crile and Rev Le Roy Thompson in charge. A Masonic service will be at the grave and Eastern Star members handle floral work. Active pallbearers include C C Cagle Joe J Lane Will C Lawrence Rauph Roberts H B Smurl John C Peek Claude Hobbs H M Dow. Honorary pallbearers named from a long list. Roswell stores to close during the funeral per the merchants association.
Albuquerque on October 23 AP reports about 300000 New Mexico sheep and goats affected by the governments relief program. Of these, 20000 sheep were shipped and the rest condemned. 101070 killed as unfit for human consumption include 87026 sheep of non Indian ranchers and 4025 for Indians. Goats killed total 10019. Snell, Sheep Sanitary Board secretary, heads to Fort Worth to discuss lamb shipments into Texas wheat fields without dipping.
Santa Fe AP Gov A W Hockenhull after east state trip signed 68 pardons and citizenship restorations. They went to men who served full sentences with no prison rule violations per warden John B McManus recommendations, and thus are entitled under the law.
Caswell Neal assailed Congressman Chavez at a Carrizozo rally, accusing him of memory lapses over relatives on the public payroll and questioning sincerity amid economic hardship. He also cited Democratic candidate Clyde Tingley as a former Republican convention delegate from Albuquerque in 1920, alleging a switch for selfish gain.
Democratic candidate John J. Dempsey said the party ran a dignified campaign across about half the state counties. He asserted no personal attacks or hired mudslinging, and pledged to continue campaigning on merits before voters.
Redwood Calif Oct 23 AP three youths were held in jail after being captured by guards at the San Mateo bridge for allegedly kidnapping Wesley Strong a 27 year old San Francisco bank teller. The suspects Thomas Hogan Archie Bigazzi and Machie Endola all from Daly City stopped for tolls when Strong jumped from the car and cried for help.
Louisville Oct 23 AP Mrs Frances Robinson 23 today pleaded not guilty to kidnapping Mrs Alice Speed Stoll and plans were made to try her in federal court October 29. U S District Attorney Thomas J Sparks seeks to bring Thomas H Robinson Sr to try both defendants simultaneously without waiting for capture of the younger Robinson. A Nashville hearing on the capias to move the elder Robinson to Louisville was reported. he is free on 25000 bond and will resist removal. The young woman faces potential death sentence alongside husband and his father.
Dennis Chavez and Tingley campaigned in Las Vegas urging support for Democratic candidates for Senator and Governor. Tingley attacked Sen. Bronson Cutting, predicted the end of the Cutting party, and urged voters to exchange favors for votes. Chavez praised President Roosevelt and aligned with progressive Democrats while criticizing rival nomes. The pair planned further stops in Mora.
