Eminent and beloved resident Mr. Simpson died today at Wichita. The passing ends a long career in community service and local affairs as neighbors mourn the loss of a respected figure.
Former congressman Jerry Simpson of Kansas died at St. Francis hospital in Wichita at 6 05 AM from heart aneurism after ten days of critical condition. He lived in Roswell since 1902, built a local business, publicized Pecos Valley development, lectured nationwide, and left an estate valued around 10000. Burial planned in Wichita. survived by wife Jane and son Lester.
Ernest New Roy Miller and Olin Nokes pleaded guilty in district court this morning to taking letters from the post office. The more serious charge was nailed. Sentence set for tomorrow. Vicente Gonzales tried under Edmunds law and found guilty. Sentence tomorrow. Four indictments returned by the Federal grand jury with four Territorial arraignments resulting in pleas of not guilty.
Lincoln county stock properties offer abundant irrigation water and open ranges. One ranch sits on the north side of the Capitan mountains, another on the Ruidoso river with a well improved farm on the Hondo river. Inquiries at Record office. 9913.
A cancelling machine has been installed in the Roswell post office replacing hand stamps with a ringing device. It can perform the work of half a dozen clerks, a labor saving improvement urged by Post Master Kellahin.
In Santiago on Oct 22 a protest against the import tax on Argentine cattle escalated into a riot. Police fired on the crowd, killing ten and wounding hundreds. Rioters wrecked streetcars and broke electric lights as troops were set to arrive.
President Roosevelt travels through Georgia into Alabama on a night run from St. Augustine. The presidential party will stay in Mobile for two hours at 4:30 pm for a speech. New Orleans meanwhile prepares for the President's visit as carnival season begins and quarantine orders fade.
Jefferson City Mo Oct 23 The governor s mansion suffered 10000 damage in a morning fire at three o clock Governor Folk woke to crackling flames telephoned the fire department and tried to extinguish the fire with hand extinguishers before guiding his wife and guests to safety then turned to protecting portraits of former governors
A. L. Conrad, long time traffic manager of the Pecos Valley and North Eastern railroad, has been promoted to auditor of disbursements at Topeka. He visited the city last night and introduced D. L. Meyers who will take Conrad's old traffic manager post locally. Friends here regret his departure from the Santa Fe.
Fred Gwynmer, president of the defunct Enterprise National Bank, says the shortage will be very large and may hit 1,500,000 dollars. He states directors will ensure payment and the bank will reopen, with audits not yet completed.
E L Wildy of Tennessee hotel Shelby and Mrs Payne visit Lakewood to handle land interests. Payne travels from Lakewood to visit J T Carlton's family as 7 dollar per 1000 acres strip sale notes appear.

Yesterday's revival services at the Presbyterian church drew a large crowd with special singing led by Mr. Hoppy the evangelistic singer. The solo by Mr. Hoppy and a duet by Miss Rodkey and Mr. Hoppy were praised as perhaps the best of that type heard in the city.
Night school will gather each evening this week at 6 45 p m to receive books and outline study for the following week at the Presbyterian church.
