In Lusaka the SWAPO secretary Moses Garoeb said the guerrilla group has asked for massive foreign military assistance to intensify the war for Namibia's independence. He noted arms shopping followed Sam Nujoma's Cuba visit and said SWAPO needs weapons from supporters, while denying a demand for foreign troops.

He favors interstate natural gas carriage and notes New Mexico and other states rely on interagency pipelines. He reflects on politics and his father Huey Long, and comments on Carter and divestiture.
President Ford stated there is absolutely no validity to rumors he would pardon Watergate figures. He named ex Attorney General John Mitchell and White House aides John Ehrlichman and H. R. Haldeman as targets of the speculation.
At least 12 children in Holland Patent, New York, have had emergency appendectomies in three weeks amid an intestinal illness suspected to be caused by a contaminated water supply. Some cases extend to other Oneida County towns. symptoms include fever vomiting diarrhea and skin rashes. Health officials isolated yersinia bacteria linked to the illness and trucked in water as fountains were shut down. No deaths reported.
A Norwegian tanker Frosta crashed broadside into the George Prince ferry near Luling Louisiana killing four and leaving about 50 missing. Surviving passengers were taken to hospital as rescuers searched the swift river and riverbanks for victims and debris.
