West Berlin officials and commentators speculated that Moscow may soon remove East German leader Walter Ulbricht to ease direct talks with East Germany. Soviet Premier Khrushchev delivered a sharp blow to Ulbricht amid growing calls for change in Berlin policy.
United States and Western allies press for an anti test motion at the U N General Assembly as Moscow faces a 50 megaton Soviet blast plan. The 101 nation committee votes place India as lead for a new voluntary moratorium and push a U S British resolution for a treaty to end tests under international control.
Washington AP diplomatic sources report Moscow issued a note renewing a Soviet stance on West Berlin air corridors, insisting they are for supplying Western garrisons. The note, given to U.S., British, and French embassies, signals continued Soviet opposition to Western use of the lanes for civilian traffic. Rusk said Khrushchev’s Moscow speech text was not yet available and offered cautious remarks on peace prospects.
New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission reviewed a request for permanent 80 acre proration units in the Cha Cha Gallup pool. Benson Montin Greer Drilling Corp led the proposal with Humble and Pan American representatives testifying.
