Senator Edward Kennedy will form a Kennedy for President exploratory committee possibly next week to raise funds and coordinate strategy if he runs against President Carter. Stephen Smith, Kennedy’s brother in law, is expected to head the committee with Martin Katz as potential financial comptroller, per Southwick and Wall Street Journal reports.
Gov Bruce King and cabinet panel warn inflation and rising state costs will likely absorb a $90 million surplus leaving no further tax relief. Senate Finance head Sen Aubrey Dunn questions spending most of the surplus and hints at possible larger income tax rebates. Highway and human services leaders cite rising costs and growing program demand, while staff seek pay raises and budget adjustments.
Roswell District Judge Paul Snead issued a preliminary injunction barring organizer Bill Ward from moving the Mule-O-Rama Futurity from Ruidoso Downs to Del Rio Texas. Ward says he owns controlling rights and is not bound by New Mexico law. Plaintiffs seek entry fees and mules costs totaling about 400 to 500 dollars per entrant. Ward did not attend the hearing and the judge ordered asset preservation and a bond to cover the 30 000 to 50 000 dollar purse.
