The Hobbs Public Defender office announces a 90 day period during which no new appointments will be made in Lea County adult criminal courts due to state budget cuts and staff shortages. Funding comes from the state with aim to provide counsel for indigent defendants.
DA Dianna Luce of the Fifth Judicial District warned in the special session that her office seeks a 1.5 percent budget increase while contending that ongoing cuts risk eroding the ability to handle a rising caseload. She noted prior reductions forced personnel cuts even as the judiciary faced a 3 percent cut signed by Gov. Susana Martinez.
Community members and leaders gathered at Pioneer Plaza to honor victims at the Roswell Refuge Remember My Name Day vigil.
