Senate leaders push toward a deal to avert a Treasury default and reopen the government. A midweek deadline looms as talks revive hopes for borrowing authority through February and reopening until mid January while markets weigh a possible AAA downgrade.
In an Eddy County case, New Mexico Military Institute sues its former Alumni Association over use of the institute name and logos. The suit seeks to block fundraising and access to about 5 million dollars tied to the school. Judge Jane Shuler-Grey set limited hearings, delaying other matters and planning a ruling by week’s end.
The Chaves County Sheriff's Office has added charges against Serena M. Escamilla and Jorge U. Zamora after three search warrants at an East Alameda Street apartment. Investigators recovered items from six burglaries, drugs, and a .22 rifle. A Briggs and Stratton generator valued at 800 was later linked to additional burglaries and identified by a Midway area victim as stolen. Zamora also faces felon in possession charges.
Roswell Boys & Girls Club, serving 50 to 60 youths at 201 S Grand Ave, seeks to broaden after school offerings with wrestling and pool reopening planned. Director Jaynan McKelcey notes volunteers and six staff support a program aimed at developing responsible community members. Membership runs about $400 a year, with financial aid possible for families in need.
Abu Anas al Libi also known as Nazih Abdul Hamed al Ruqai was arraigned in federal court in New York on bombing related charges. He was captured in Libya in a Oct 5 raid and interrogated aboard the USS San Antonio before transfer to the United States. If convicted he faces life in prison. Republicans criticized the handling and urged Guantanamo Bay for continued interrogation.
