Spacecraft OGO 2 launched from Vandenberg in orbit

At Vandenberg Air Force Base California the Orbiting Geophysical Observatory 2 or OGO 2 a versatile unmanned satellite was launched into polar orbit atop a Thor Agena D. The 1150 pound craft aims to run 20 experiments to study particles rays and waves around earth and assess spaceflight hazards. Initial orbit confirmed though minor guidance issues kept some instruments awaiting data later in the week.

Training increases for select force Guard and Reserve

The Army outlines expanded training for about 150000 select force members drawn from 31,000 reservists and 119000 National Guard soldiers. Training jumps to 72 drills per year with eight week mobilization readiness aims.

Four Guard Reserve Units Bolstered in New Mexico

New Mexico National Guard and Army Reserve units will be brought to full strength and combat readiness. The 5th Automatic Weapons Battalion in eastern cities adds 698 personnel, along with five from the 110th Signal Detachment in Santa Fe. The revised list also includes 200th Army National Guard units across Clovis Roswell Lovington and Portales with 698 men. 110th Signal Detachment in Santa Fe with five men. 313th Adjutant General Postal Unit in Albuquerque with 16 men. and 900th Quartermaster Unit in Las Cruces and Silver City with 271 men. Guardsmen will drill one extra day monthly to reach readiness.

Ikeya-Seki Comet Visible in New Mexico Until Oct 20

New Mexicans can view the Ikeya-Seki Comet until sunset October 20, as described by NMSU astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh. He cautioned against using telescopes or binoculars to look at the sun and noted the comet’s long tail could make it one of the sky’s brightest objects after the sun and moon.
