Norris asserts US could swiftly defeat Japan in Pacific

Senator Norris of Nebraska argues that a German victory over Russia might prompt Japan to threaten American shipping in the Pacific. Three Room House Gutted By Fire At Summit Street

Fire of unknown origin gutted Thomas F. Smead's three room frame house at 407 West Summit early today. The family was inside but no injuries. Firemen arrived after a 1:45 a.m. call and battled flames that destroyed the interior including floor walls ceiling furniture and clothing. The property was not insured.

Public Service Hearing Saturday on refinancing plan

The New Mexico Public Service Commission will hear an application by Trinidad Electric Transmission Railway and Gas Company to reorganize its finances. Portuguese Ship Corte Real Sunk by German Submarine

Lisbon reports the 2044 ton Portuguese steamship Corte Real was torpedoed by a German submarine. Five crew and 31 passengers survived after lifeboats were towed to shore. Among those onboard were two Portuguese women with two children, an American doctor, and a French passenger.

Police Motorcycle Damaged By Fire

A police motorcycle was badly damaged by fire in the 200 block on West McGaffey last night. Officer Charles Blake, uninjured, tried to smother the blaze after the machine backfired during start up before firefighters using chemicals extinguished the flames.

Dempsey Heads West For Reclamation Meeting

John J. Dempsey undersecretary of interior plans to leave Santa Fe for Phoenix to attend the National Reclamation Association convention. He will travel with a Middle Rio Grande conservancy delegation from Albuerquerque and join city engineer Lea Rowland and other Pecos Valley delegates. Mayor Hall and City Attorney Malone will attend flood control talks in Carlsbad with Army engineers.

SANTA FE October 14 Paul S Fox state public health engineer and Dr C H Bouthirt county health work director resigned from the state health department after brief letters from state health director J R Scott advising they would not be needed after October 31 Fox said both chose to resign stating they could not return under any circumstances Dr Douthitt offered no comment Scott planned conferences later today Fox a long time department employee and a Kansas and Harvard educated engineer had served nearly 19 years Douthitt had led the Union County Wealth Department since 1933

A C Sellman Injured In Fall At Roswell Cotton Gin

A C Sellman of Roswell suffered a broken leg and facial injuries in a fall at the Farmers Cotton Gin on South Atkinson Avenue shortly before noon today. He was taken by Ballard ambulance to St. Marys hospital. Manager J W Jones said no witness saw the accident but that Sellman fell about 8 or 9 feet. He had been employed at the gin for about four years.

Barrymore Suffers Laryngitis Prompting Health Note

Hollywood reports John Barrymore is ill with laryngitis that worsened a chronic stomach problem. Dr Hugo M. Kersten says there is no cause for alarm and Barrymore is not critical. The actor went to bed yesterday as word of the illness spread through the movie colony.

Roswell Scouters Plan Large Pot Luck Dinner

A district meeting in the Roswell courtroom outlined a pot luck supper for all Boy Scouts, parents, and Scouters on November 18 with about 400 expected. J E Wolfe and Oscar Greene led the session, Earl McClure spoke as acting council executive, and the group set the Court of Honor for November 4 with a late November roll call. McClure travels to Clovis and northern Eastern New Mexico Area Council towns this week to assist a council wide finance drive November 3 to 22. The campaign targets 20342 dollars to cover all council expenses and debt.
