Clif ford Marshall Thompson aged 8 foot 6 inches and once a circus giant died in a Portland hospital a week before his 51st birthday. A large orange red plume formed a 30 mile long letter in the upper atmosphere during an Air Force sodium test near Holloman. The 27 minute plume was visible hundreds of miles away with Vega near its center. Complete results to be released in two weeks or longer.

Artesia youths aged 15 and 17 admitted attacking a 15 year old Artesia girl after a football game. In custody of Deputy Sheriff Marvin T. Hill, Bertha Lee Fluelen, 27, was moved from the county jail to the state penitentiary in Santa Fe to serve a one to five year term on a worthless check count.

Col. Wilson R. Wood, inspector-general of the Eighth Air Force and former Walker’s 509th Bomb Wing commander, received the first Oak Leaf Cluster to the Commendation Ribbon at a Westover AFB ceremony on Oct. 4. The award cites his role from May 17, 1953, to May 31, 1955, guiding tests of the Mobility Plan, forming the 909th Refueling Squadron, and preparing B-50 to B-47 conversion procedures, with the wing scoring top in SAC analysis and 100 percent in a simulated combat mission.
In Carlsbad New Mexico Tommy Buchanan 40 of Roswell died from injuries after a two car crash near Carlsbad late Tuesday. He suffered severe head injuries and crushed chest despite 10 blood transfusions. Driver of the other car Bobby Branch 19 of Artesia survived and was flown to El Paso for surgery.
In district court James M. Price of Public Dance Promotions files an $875 damage suit against Lionel Hampton after a bus crash on the way to Albuquerque injures the bandsman. The action says the amount was paid as a deposit for the band's appearance that night.
Santa Fe police kept Governor John F. Simms under heightened security after an anonymous threat. State Police Chief Joe Roach said a patrol officer guards the mansion by day and noted the call may be from a crackpot. Simms avoided details, citing standard procedures and law enforcement practices. The FBI had not joined the case, and officials emphasized precaution over specifics.
