President Kennedy warns of no easy end to East West clashes amid dangerous times. He cites major differences with the Soviet Union after talks with Gromyko and Rusk, noting no immediate path to Berlin agreement while stressing defense buildup and potential tax implications.
A milestone in the Atlas launch complex near Roswell will occur Tuesday October 31 when Site No 10 is handed to the Air Force after the construction phase. Dignitaries from the Army Corps of Engineers Air Force New Mexico delegation Gov Mechem and others attend a luncheon and ribbon cutting with a 10 am briefing at Walker Air Force Base. The turnover is the first of 12 such events slated through January 1 1962 as part of a 110 million project to house Atlas missiles, with General Dynamics Astronautics and other firms involved in later phases.
President Kennedy sends Gen Maxwell D Taylor on an urgent mission to assess Communist threats in South Viet Nam amid reports of heavy Red pressure on Ngo Dinh Diem's government. Washington also plans to resume Berlin talks with the Soviet Union, with Ambassador Llewellyn Thompson returning to Moscow.
New Mexico State University and state common schools share $108,897.91 from recent land sales handled by the State Land Office. Buyers include L. D. French and Reno Stallings of Houston paying $300 per acre for 40 acres in Lincoln County, with improvements owed to Donald B. Anderson. Proceeds go to the permanent fund for school beneficiaries.
Harold J. Barnett of Albuquerque governor of District 19 Optimist International will preside over the quarterly meeting at the Holiday Inn Roswell Saturday and Sunday. Judge George L. Reese Roswell will speak at the governor's dinner at 7 p.m. Saturday. Claude Allen will receive Distinguished President and the Roswell Optimist Club Honor Club for 1960-61. Delegates register at 10 a.m. Saturday with sessions at 1 p.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday. Women tour a Roswell windowless school at 2 p.m. Saturday and a brunch is set for 9:50 a.m. Sunday. District 19 covers New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.
A search was called off after a pilotless radio controlled drone was identified as the downed craft west of Pinon. Mayhill district forest ranger Andy Ellis reported seeing the craft go down. Military bases in the area confirmed all planes accounted for and the launch site remains undetermined.
A California pilot, Joel T. Honey, 52, survived four days on a snowbound Mt. Timpanogos site after a crash that killed co pilot William Royal. Honey crawled through snow, used gasoline soaked rags as improvised signals, and rolled snowballs to attract help. Rescue crews braved knee deep snow and 8,500 foot altitude to reach him near the wreckage on the central Utah peak. Honey was hospitalized after a nearly 45 minute unconscious period, while Royal died at the scene.
The New Mexico Democratic Caravan rolled through Roswell on a state tour from Farmington to Las Cruces with U S Sen Clinton P Anderson, State Reps Joe Montoya and Tom Morris, three governor hopefuls, Sen Ed Mead, Rep Jack M Campbell, Mayor Leo Murphy, former Gov John Burroughs, and Tom Brown Sr. Attendees included attorneys and public officials from the area. Anderson announced brackish water plant specifications are available from Interior Department. Morris praised SBA reorganization under Kennedy. Montoya defended Democratic fiscal restraint and noted House appropriations committee cuts to the Eisenhower budget as revised by Kennedy.

Dr Walter Patton 31 physician. Bob Biderback 29 used car dealer. Identification relied on personal effects. bodies were charred.
Dallas AP reports Speaker Sam Rayburn, ill with incurable cancer and pneumonia, regained consciousness and showed improvement. He is out of a coma, stronger, and recognizes family and associates. vital signs stabilized with normal temperature.
Tokyo AP report quotes Maj. Gen. Oliver K. Niess, U.S. Air Force surgeon general, stating that the radioactive fallout recorded in northern Japan deserves very serious study.
Representatives Joseph M. Montoya and Tom Morris announced a congressional hearing to be held here before January 1 to discuss a House bill providing recreational facilities for Elephant Butte and Caballo Lakes.
