The Elks Carnival show committee finished the prime list for prizes led by Dr John Jenkins, claiming the event offers the best premiums yet and inviting the entire Pecos Valley to enter. Entries may reach 100 or more with dozens of prize categories for horses, drivers, mules, and farm teams, as the event also features sermons and community celebrations.
A steamer foundered in Lake Superior last night with the loss of twenty one seamen. Rescue crews battled darkness to locate survivors and recover bodies, while authorities investigate the cause of the disaster.
The steel steamer Cypress bound for Detroit foundered last night on Lake Superior near Deer Park about thirty miles from Grand Marais. All twenty two crew perished except the second mate who was washed ashore lashed to a life raft and survived in critical condition. Bodies of two crewmen were recovered. Edgar Caffee came home last night after a visit to Colorado Utah and Idaho. He traveled to meet friends and handle business during the duration of the trip and is expected to resume duties soon.
