A string of disasters strikes with wrecks explosions and fires causing many deaths and widespread damage across the city. Authorities investigate causes as rescuers search for survivors and assess structural ruin.
A string of early 20th century incidents reports multiple deaths and injuries. In Cheyenne a U P freight collision kills two engineers a fireman and a brakeman with one tramp hurt. In New York a railroad tunnel explosion kills three and renders a dozen unconscious as rescuers battle smoke. Summerside fire destroys 42 buildings with vast tremors of loss feared. A later bulletin notes the National and American League teams in a world series game ending 7 to 1 with cold winds and wary crowds.
New York October 11 The condition of Mrs Jefferson Davis is considered serious after a severe cold fought unsuccessfully with treatment. Her illness developed over several days and was not initially feared but now appears grave.
Miss Irma Schutz will wed David S. Rosenwald at 7 p.m. tomorrow at West Copper avenue home with Rabbi Kaplan officiating. Her mother Mrs. Sam Schutz and sisters Mrs. James Grunsfeld and Mrs. Nolifeld attend, with sister Mrs. Harry Dillon from San Diego and brother Aaron Schutz from Silver City arriving for the wedding.
Chicago reports a World Series game played despite freezing conditions. The National and American League teams faced bad weather as the second game of the championship series unfolded with both teams contending for the title.
In Deming on Oct 10 the grand lodge of Odd Fellows of New Mexico elected officers for the coming year. Names listed include A. B. Schlyster of Albuquerque as grand master and J. B. Hodgson of Deming as grand warden.

Harry Hamilton and his wife returned to Artesia last evening. Hamilton joined the Artesia ball team to umpire the two games they played.
Roswell and Western Railway Company files incorporation papers in Santa Fe with capital of $100,000 and 1000 shares. Founders include K S Woodruff C W DeFreest R F Barnett Geo T Veal and W T Wells. Plan builds a line from Roswell east to the Texas line with routes north and south of the Pecos River bridge and surveys underway for plans and estimates to be ready in about ten days. The project aims at a Texas connection and roads near Comanche Gap Cap Rock and Ha German ranch with community support from Roswell business interests.
A late departing mountain fast mail train derailed near the city limits injuring ten and killing engineer John Caspar. Among the seriously hurt were Fireman Peter Rafferty Mail Clerk H J James and passenger E Glartin. The crash occurred near the site of a previous wreck last spring.
News from New York on October 11 reports the failure of J. M. Ceballos & Co. linked to Manuel Silveira, their Havana agent, with alleged defalcation exceeding one million dollars. Silveira remains at large aboard a sea vessel after leaving Havana October 2, complicating Cuban financial affairs and sugar crop lending.
Snow began in Buffalo on Oct 11 causing extensive damage to fruit and shade trees and crippling telephone and telegraph service. One man died from live wires, another from freezing. Severe sleet hit Rochester and a record low of 28 was set in Warren, Pennsylvania, while frost damaged cotton across Georgia and Texas and eight inches fell in Michigan.
Nobleman from an old English family arrives in Roswell to attend the Elks Carnival. Two European swordsmen perform in the Public Pavilion offering a historic duel styled exhibition. A renowned Lightning Cartoonist from New York City headlines the acts. Five days remain before the Mummy laughs.
The first regular meeting of The Woman's Club at the Carnegie Library drew a large, enthusiastic crowd. President Mrs. Charles Edgar Mason gave the welcome, then Miss Marie M. Holt led the program with a paper on Ancient France tracing Gaul from tribal settlements to the fall of the Roman Empire.
Miss Holt presented a comprehensive history paper that felt shorter than its hour reading would suggest. A lengthy general discussion followed with questions and omitted facts, followed by Mrs J J Hagerman on French pronunciation. The Wo man’s Club begins a new program line, with success indicated by the first meeting. The next Club meeting is Wednesday October 24.
In Philadelphia on Oct 11 federal warrants issued for Armour & Co agents over sale of hams and meats containing boracic acid. Food Commissioner Warren says company liable under the Pure Food Act effective Sept 1.
In St Louis Missouri on October 11 a railway incident caused one fatality and ten injuries as trains collided while attempting to make up lost time. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as officials investigated the cause of the accident.
John W. Price of Artesia was injured when a refrigerator car door swung open at Hagerman, tearing flesh from his leg. He was transported to St Marys Hospital in Dilleys ambulance for operation and care after being found resting on the depot platform.
It is reported that more oil has been struck at the Roswell Oil Company well. A barrel was bailed at one time and late Tuesday night gas pressure blew the bailer from the well.
Captains Poe Shaw Cahoon Kellahin Hamilton Willson left today for Albuquerque to attend the Masonic Grand Lodge session next week. The Cadet baseball team yesterday defeated Artesia 9 to 0 in a one sided game.
Observation taken at 6 am in Roswell New Mexico reports max temperature 74, min 38, mean 56 with no precipitation and light west wind. Forecasts predict fair and warmer tonight and Friday. M Wright Official in Charge.
