Truck Plunges 30 Feet Into Ruidoso River

Las Cruces man Phillip Salter, 38, crawled from a truck that toppled into the Ruidoso River after a 30-foot drop on U.S. 70 near Perry fruit stand. The trailer remained upright. Salter was treated at Ruidoso Hondo Valley General Hospital for a cut lip and minor back fractures. A Roswell wrecker recovered the vehicle.

Residents Return After-Inez Threat Near Brownsville Area

Hurricane Inez battered the Mexican coast with 135 mph winds before turning away from South Texas. Residents in the Brownsville area began returning home as warnings were lowered and skies cleared. The storm, now 17 days old, had caused at least 150 deaths and remained off Tampico as it weakened inland.

Wife of Indian Ambassador Dies in New York

Mme. Parthasarathi, wife of Indian ambassador Gopalaswami Parthasarathi, died at Mt. Sinai Hospital after a period of illness. A former Indian Parliament member and educator, she taught English literature at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey during her time in the United States.
