Stay on Jobs Urged By Selective Service Chief

The Selective Service warned men to remain in their current civilian employment rather than flock to defense industries to dodge the draft. Maj. Joseph F. Battley said occupational deferments rely on job tenure, and the army plans to fill most of the first 400,000 conscripts from volunteers. He noted state offices report many volunteering to serve.

Congress Not Able Agree On Recess Plan

Willkie Blames Roosevelt for Domestic and World Crisis

Republican nominee Wendell L. Willkie told a New London crowd that the Roosevelt administration bungled both domestic and international affairs and would drag the nation into bankruptcy after the European war. He warned of European inflation and U.S. competition, saying postwar policy would worsen living standards. Willkie drew about 10,000 at New London and 42,000 in New Haven as he campaigned through Connecticut, insisting he would accelerate production and drive the campaign to Election Day.
