The 11 member commission unanimously named Jorge Alvarado chief public defender for New Mexico. He will lead the independent Public Defender Department starting next month, replacing acting head Bennett Baur until then. Alvarado has led New Mexico Legal Aid Inc in Albuquerque since 2009 and holds a Drake University law degree from 1982. The department serves Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia, Socorro, and Torrance counties. Voters approved the constitutional amendment last year creating the independent agency.
