Auction of Harageh artifacts averted by Met purchase
The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought the Treasure of Harageh, a 37 piece 1900 B C Egyptian collection found by Sir Flinders Petrie, preventing a planned public sale condemned by historians. The St. Louis Society had planned to sell to cover storage costs, drawing ethical rebuke from the Archaeological Institute and experts who warned private sales erase research context.
