AP poll of 1071 voters after the debate shows Carter with 38.2 percent to Ford’s 34.6 percent, a narrow Carter lead. Carter’s post debate favorability rose to 48.5 percent while Ford stood at 44.8 percent. The third debate is scheduled for Oct 22 in Williamsburg, Virginia.
U S Senator Joseph Montoya challenged his opponent and New Mexico voters to prove a dishonesty claim. He spoke at an Eastern New Mexico University Roswell chili supper as Democrat turnout backed Harrison Schmitt and other ticket candidates. Other speakers urged continued support for Carter and Byrd urged unified, veto-free leadership in Washington.
Panamanian Foreign Minister Aquilino Boyd announced negotiations over the canal zone would restart within two weeks with the U S negotiating team traveling to Panama. In Washington Omar Torrijos criticized the canal talks as irresponsible during the presidential campaign debate between Carter and Ford.
A Daily Record survey finds Roswell residents showed little reaction to the Carter Ford second debate. About half watched, with many saying candidates avoided core issues and no clear winner emerged. People cited indifference, boredom, or personal leanings toward Carter or Ford.
The proposed state constitutional amendment would let smaller New Mexico counties switch from three to five commissioners if voters approve. Counties affected include Chaves Dona Ana Lea McKinley San Juan and Santa Fe, with district based elections and potential growth to four districts.
