Americans Die As Viet Cong Hit Helicopter West of Saigon

A U S Army helicopter with five Americans and a Vietnamese aboard was shot down in flames thirteen miles west of Saigon. All six aboard presumed killed. three charred bodies recovered, three others missing. A second helicopter nearby survived and was being repaired. Additional Viet Cong attacks and a failed coup bid in Saigon marked a tense day in the war.

Tshombe Held Hostage By Nasser

Cairo AP report says Premier Moise Tshombe of the Congo is a hostage of Egypt’s government but seeks admission to the nonaligned nations conference. Nasser refuses release until Congo withdraws gendarmes around Leopoldville embassy. An aide says Tshombe prefers staying to watch the conference on TV. Kasavubu’s telegram supports Tshombe’s claim as Congo premier. Nkrumah calls for an OAU peace force to pacify the Congo.

First and Third Streets Set to Become Two Way

City Council approved converting First and Third Streets from one way to two way. Changes to Richardson Avenue were discussed but rejected. Fourth and Walnut Streets already two way. Downtown meters may be capped for free parking during the Dec 5 Christmas Parade, with a committee study. Council also awarded bids for vehicles, raised insurance for the public works superintendent, and set a second reading for a city trailer ordinance.

GM and IUE strike national three year labor pact

Special Buses Planned for Roswell Clovis Game

Roswell High School sponsors special buses to Clovis Friday for the RHS Clovis football game. Round trip fares are two dollars for adults and one dollar for students. Booster Club covers half of each student ticket reducing it to one dollar. Student admission is 75 cents and adult tickets are 1.25. Call 622-7710 or 622-5110 to join.

Cobean Named State Candidate for State Treasurer

The GOP State Central Committee named Roswell businessman Warren Cobean to replace Keith Moore as a candidate for state treasurer. Moore withdrew from the race recently for personal reasons.

1700 Bales Ginned Here

A total of 1,700 bales of cotton have been ginned at the four locations of Farmer's Incorporated Gins. Ginning began September 2 and will continue to December 31. About 300 farmers are members. gins are at W. Atkinson East Grand Plains South Springs Acres and Salt Creek.

White sit in protest ends in mass arrests in Queens

In New York City Police arrested 65 adults on loitering charges and one man on felonious assault during a third day sit in at Public School 149 in Jackson Heights Queens. About 980 children were taken to court as demonstrators and onlookers clashed outside the school during the protest against an integration program pairing the neighborhood school with a nearby mainly black elementary. The program aims to balance enrollments across eight schools with cross district bussing.
