Yanks Win Fifth Straight World Series

New York Yankees clinched a 4 3 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers in game six to win their fifth consecutive World Series. Billy Martin delivered the go ahead RBI in the bottom of the ninth after Carl Furillo’s two run homer tied the game. Hank Bauer and Yogi Berra set the table with a walk and a deep fly before Martin’s single scored Bauer. Reynolds gained the win and set a series strikeout record with 62.

Birds misjudge distance collide with Boston buildings

Boston reports hundreds of migrating small birds killed in building collisions. The John Hancock Building, Boston’s tallest, averages 30 to 40 birds weekly as warblers and thrushes fail to gauge distances and fly under the illuminated tower during southward migration.

Eddy County Grand Jury Ordered to Report Specific Items

Carlsbad authorities say the Eddy County grand jury was recalled by District Judge C Roy Anderson to address a partial report. The panel is to examine jail conditions gambling school attendance law handling of prisoners juvenile liquor sales and possible ballot fraud in Artesia in 1952.

Entries Pour In Prior to Fair Opening

The Eastern New Mexico State Fair nears its largest opening yet with an 11 o clock parade tomorrow. Animals for all divisions arrive at Fair Park and officials rush to allocate space for lambs cattle swine and other entries. The Plaza de Flores prepares in the Agricultural building while the Midway buzzes with new attractions and prideful preparations. Roswell streets adopt a festive holiday mood as crowds gather under flag draped wires along Main Street.

Five Hurt In Studebaker Pickup Wreck North Of Roswell

Five members of the Sanchez family were injured when a 1951 Studebaker pickup left the road near Roswell, overturned twice, and sent occupants to St. Mary's Hospital. Driver Leroy Sanchez, 14, was unhurt. others suffered bruises, cuts, and a possible internal injury.

Court Handles Pair of DWI Cases

The Police Court blotter over the weekend saw two DWI cases. Daniel A. Storm pleaded guilty and was fined 150 dollars and given 10 days in jail with a temporary deferment on the latter. Francis J. Greeley faced the same penalty. A total of 13 cases appeared on today's list including four drunkenness and two drunk and vagrancy charges.

Warren becomes U S Chief Justice in brief ceremony

Earl Warren is sworn in as the 14th Chief Justice of the United States at a noon ceremony opening the Supreme Court term. President Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower attend. Warren resigns as California governor after a 34 year public life.

Wreck at Fifth and Richardson Sends Three to Hospital

A three sedan collision at W Fifth St and N Richardson Ave near City Hall overturned one car. Three injured occupants were hospitalized at St Marys Hospital including Shirley Whitfield 15 Marvin Whitfield 16 and Herbert A Luttrell 29. The 1952 Ford driven by Luttrell veered onto its side and the Chevrolet and Buick were involved. Police reported the crash occurred at 730 PM.

Dozen Pretty Girls To Appear on Float In Parade Tomorrow

The Paletteers Roswell High School art club will decorate a float for the Eastern New Mexico State Fair parade. Twelve girls in colored strapless gowns will represent the Paletteers colors purple and gold with chrysanthemums and autumn leaves on the lower float. The parade starts at 11 a.m. with at least 49 floats. Mitchell's Implement Company supplied the track and builders include Ted Berckes E. J. Roberts Roy H. Lee and Earl Nelson.

Flag Display Urged During Southeastern New Mexico Fair

Officials of the Southeastern New Mexico State Fair urged all city businesses to display the American flag daily during the fair. Main Street is decorated with banners and pennants to enhance the city’s appearance and the flag display would add to the streets' attractiveness.

Planes to Test Global Mobility B 36 Missions

The Air Force will dispatch two B 36 squadrons for global mobility tests this month. One squadron from Walker AFB Roswell NM will train for a week at Thule Arctic base Greenland. Another from Carswell AFB TX will spend about 11 days at a North Africa forward base likely in French Morocco.

Fire guts Falk Oil storage warehouse in Edgewater blaze

A large storage warehouse owned by Falk Oil Co. in Edgewater was gutted by a fire with blasts punctuating the flames. Damage was estimated at $300,000. Authorities investigated the blaze as an early morning incident.

States People Worried About Defense Setup

Senator Henry Jackson said Americans are worried about national defense and will pay high taxes to boost it. He aligned with Rep. W Sterling Cole on budget balance, while warning on Russia’s hydrogen bomb progress and the need for a strong air force to deploy deliverable bombs. Flemming warned Russia could strike suddenly, stressing deterrence and the goal to fight and win if attacked.

Hams Join Emergency Test In Roswell Area

Roswell amateur radio operators took part in the national simulated emergency test with eight mobile stations covering bridges and roads around Roswell. Twenty two locals participated, sending messages from fixed stations to state and national offices, using FCC designated war time frequencies.

Roswell Horses Dominate New Mexico State Fair Shows

Roswell and Albuquerque horses won major honors in the eastern mount performance class. Desert Fox ridden by Sally Cousen and owned by Mrs. R. C. Jones of Roswell won the skyscraper event. Meadowland owned by Mrs. Jones and ridden by Dottie White placed second. Moore ridden and owned by Howard Babcock Jr. of Roswell won the mounted Arab event. Jones horses also took other halter and performance honors as livestock events closed.
