Italian newspapers sharply criticize American aid to Britain, arguing it prolongs the war and harms Italy’s standing. The denunciations reflect growing anti Allied support within Italian public opinion as the war drags on.
Northwestern Wildcats routed Syracuse 40-0 at Archbold Stadium in Syracuse New York as Bill De Correvont and Don Clawson each scored twice. A crowd of 25 000 watched the Big Ten team take control late in the third period.
Paul Derringer pitched the Reds to a 5 to 2 victory over the Tigers at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. Cincinnati built a early lead, supporting Derringer who allowed only five hits as Hank Greenberg and Rudy York struggled. The crowd reached 54,093 as Cincinnati tied the series 2-2 with the win.

Victory, not peace, was the dominant note of the three hour conference described as a war and diplomatic council. England is vulnerable in many places and will be struck, the spokesman added. During the French campaign Germany reportedly took 1,800,000 prisoners. The visit of George Scapini to Berlin was noted. The German high command claimed air successes over England.
Ulen Minnesota October 5 Senator Charles McNary Republican vice presidential hopeful declared reciprocal trade treaties fail to promote peace or aid agriculture and leave the nation exposed to postwar cheap imports. He urged tariff revision as a remedy noting 1921 tariff boosts slowed industrial decline and warned of a looming trade war.
Washington October 5. President Roosevelt is expected to order automatic deferment from compulsory service for all men with dependents. Revised draft regulations create a three class system with class one for immediate service, class two for essential employments, and class three for those with dependents. College students may receive medical exams soon after registering, though deferred until July 1, 1941.
A record crowd attended Roswell’s final three day rodeo show yesterday afternoon rating as the largest ever for the town. The closing performance featured an army demonstration and announced winners across six events with Mickey Hicks and Jimmy Coleman among the champions and Cotton Lee securing calf roping top honors.
New Mexico Military Institute paid 28 cents a pound for the Champion Hereford calf fed by Lewis Angel Jr. of Carlsbad, earning $274.40. The Reserve Champion calf from Royce Burns of Lovington sold to the Eastern New Mexico Hereford Breeders' Association for 21 1/2 cents a pound totaling $183.39. Auctioneer was Mr. Tiemeier of Oklahoma City. Prices rose above 15 cents as the sale progressed with strong bidding from business firms and organizations in support of 4-H club members.
The Chamber of Commerce athletic committee requires 300 tickets by Tuesday for a special train to Portales next Friday evening to the Coyote Ram game. Tickets cost 1.40 round trip, available at the Chamber of Commerce and several local shops. The train departs Roswell after five and returns about thirty minutes after the game. the high school band will ride.
Wendell L. Willkie arrived in New York and began a dense schedule of conferences with Republican leaders. He asked to lead the fight for peace, planned five to ten speeches daily, and prepared a swift round of talks at Brooklyn rallies before a motor tour of New England.
Washington October 5 Defense officials said Congress has funds to expand plant capacity to reach a 1942 production goal of 36,000 war planes annually. The defense bill totaling 1.482 billion dollars will leave 273 million for expansion once signed, with extra contracts to be signed within two weeks after enactment.
