New Mexico Viewed as Open Ground for Organized Crime

Robert Earhart, new executive director of the Governor's Commission, told the Daily Record that New Mexico offers an ideal climate for organized crime due to its open, underdeveloped state and rapid population growth. He cited gambling, prostitution, narcotics, racketeering and infiltration of legitimate business as core issues and noted NM as a funnel for drugs into national markets. Earhart spoke in Roswell and plans greater police agency cooperation and tighter regulatory coordination.

Jaramillo Faces Hearing On Assault Charges In Santa Fe

Former State Liquor Director Carlos Jaramillo appeared before Magistrate Judge Eugene Romero on two counts of aggravated assault following an alleged incident in a bar parking lot with 18 year old Edward Lucero. He was released on $10,000 unsecured bond. hearing date not set. Police say Jaramillo armed with a rifle and knife assaulted Lucero after an argument over a car door and motorcycle. The case was referred to the Santa Fe District Attorney for grand jury consideration.
