Roswell Independent and City district boards unanimously support forming a combined operating board for the Roswell Branch of Eastern New Mexico University. The move follows state status questions over the former Roswell Community College and potential tax base expansion for vocational and academic students.
Congress sent to President Johnson legislation providing temporary financing for more than twenty federal agencies until Oct 23 after agencies ran dry last weekend. The House had earlier approved funding only until Oct 10, and the Senate amended it to Oct 23. Republicans signaled plans to push spending cuts and back a 10 percent income tax surcharge until a spending agreement is reached.
The Senate Appropriations Committee extended funding through October 23 for technically moneyless departments to cover payrolls and expenses. House delays pressed for a concrete spending-cut plan while Ways and Means signals congressional appetite for cuts ahead of a tax increase. The panel added 95.5 million to space funds and a 13.5 million tweak toTeacher Corps, with the military construction package set as austere. No administration reaction was immediate. Armando Estrada Jr. arrived at 12 15 a m on the first day of 4 H Week Sept 29 Oct 3 in Memorial Osteopathic Hospital. The infant, born to Mr and Mrs Arando Estrada Route 1 Box 250, is in an incubator possibly for a month and becomes an honorary Chaves County 4 H club member.
Hydrologist George Maddox of the U S Geological Survey told Chaves County Farm Bureau members the water level decline south of the Y O fault stems from the harder rock block failing to yield water as readily as the Roswell area. He described basin boundaries and the movement of the western line over time, noted limestone aquifers supplying the system, and cited 1964 pumping at about 300 000 acre feet with some leakage to the shallow aquifer during winter months.
Bob Gibson struck out 10 over seven innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated Boston 2-1 to open the 1967 World Series. Roger Maris drove in both runs with infield outs, Jose Santiago homered for Boston, and Jim Lonborg was set to face Dick Hughes in game two.
Santa Fe Railway plans to discontinue most passenger trains as the U S Post Office shifts mail from rail cars. President John S Reed says second through fourth class mail will move by fast freight, shrinking revenue and passenger service. Trains 34 and 78, key mail routes, are slated for discontinuation with remaining services to be restructured.
