Apodaca ends Senate bid decision on family grounds

Gov. Jerry Apodaca said he will not run for the U.S. Senate in 1978. He cited family obligations and his five children, and stressed the decision was joint with wife Clara. He remains active in New Mexico politics after leaving the governorship at year's end.

Eastern New Mexico State Fair Sets New Attendance and Sale Records

Fair officials announced new records across all major categories at the 1977 Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Paid attendance reached 37,961, besting 1976’s 32,215, with rodeo views rising to 3,061 from 2,888. The Junior Livestock Sale had 117 entries totaling 85,129.32 in sales and add-ons, beating prior marks. Sheriff Leroy Carpenter and Police Chief L. M. Hall praised the event as unusually trouble-free, noting only minor incidents.

Indira Gandhi Arrested on Misuse Charge in New Delhi

Indira Gandhi, long time prime minister, was arrested at her New Delhi home by a large CBI force on charges of acquiring 104 vehicles through misuse of her official position. A crowd gathered outside as supporters denounced the arrest as political.
